Week 6 | Part 6: Finalizing the Plan
The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program presents a host of opportunities for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to specialize in certain areas within the profession and provide quality care to patients. The purpose of this paper is to consider the different specialties within the MSN program and select a preferred specialty after comparison with another one. The paper highlights the justification for the preferred specialty and the second one as well as examines a professional organization related to the selected one.
Step 1: Comparison of Nursing Specialties
There are several specialties within the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) that include being a family nurse practitioner (FNP), psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) and women’s health nurse practitioner (WHNP) among others. Therefore, my preferred specialty is family nurse practitioner (FNP). The specialty prepares one to offer high quality and integrative care for patients across their lifespans in different settings (AANP, 2022). Family nurse practitioners translate research and use evidence-based knowledge to offer healthcare for individuals, families and population with emphasis on primary care interventions. FNPs can practice independently or be part of a team.
On its part, the women’s health nurse practitioner (WHNP main role is to offer physical, intersex and transgender women with healthcare services from their puberty to menopause and beyond. The focus of WHNPs is the general healthcare of women which includes gynecological and obstetric health (AANP, 2022). As practitioner, WHNPs offer health beyond one by obstetrician as their focus is the overall good of their patients. As such, the differences between the two specialties include scope of practice and patient population (Estes et al., 2019). For instance, while all who specialize in these two areas require an MSN degree, the FNPs focus and scope is wider and includes all populations at different stages and ages. However, the WHNPs main focus is the general health of women, especially as they deal with reproductive and other critical aspects of their general health within population.
Step 2: Justification of Nursing Specialty
The core aspect of FNP is to meet the physical health needs of diverse individuals in different populations. FNPs integrate clinical knowledge and evidence-based practice to offer care across care and age continuum. The scope of their practice is broader, implying that one can still have a niche for their practice (Brennan, 2020). Therefore, based on these aspects, I believe that being a family nurse practitioner (FNP) makes more sense than being a women health nurse practitioner (WHNP).
Step 3: Professional Organizations
The professional organization for my specialty is the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Being a member of the association is an important aspect of enhancing professional knowledge, networking, and benefiting from new research information. One can become a member through subscription as long as they are practicing family nurse practitioner (FNP) or students pursuing the MSN with the FNP specialty. The association membership requires one to meet the criteria to join that include submitting credentials and paying subscription fee (AANP, 2022). AANP provides members with endless possibilities and opportunities to develop professionally by utilizing evidence-based practice and other approaches to patient care across care and age continuum.
Conclusion
The selection of a nursing specialty within the MSN program is essential as it shows the need for one to have a preferred area of professional nursing specialization to deliver quality care. The comparison helps in determining the most preferred options for effective specialization and delivery of quality care. The examination of the professional nursing organization is essential for one to get better skills and knowledge effective networking and interactions with colleagues as well as research evidence from existing literature.
