The organization serves all registered nurses who become members of professional bodies. Like AANP, the professional body advocates on behalf of the nurses for a better working environment by addressing issues such as understaffing and burnout. Additionally, the organization provides an advocacy platform where registered nurses can advocate for policy changes that make care more accessible to patients (ANA, 2022). ANA also provides education, networking, and professional development opportunities for its members. ANA operates in all states in America with local, state, and national offices to serve members across the country. The intent of the organization is to champion improvements in healthcare for both nurses and patients.

International Council of Nurses (ICN)

ICN is a professional body that brings together hundreds of nursing bodies across the globe. Hence, its unique scope is that it operates internationally on a global scale. The ICN currently has over 28 million nurse members across different countries. The intent of ICN is to promote respect for the nursing profession and encourage a highly satisfied nursing workforce (ICN, 2022). The organization encourages recognition of the competence and advanced knowledge of nurses worldwide. The purposes of these organizations align with my worldview because they seek to uplift both patients and nurses by ensuring quality and accessible care.

AB 1969 Pupil health: peer-to-peer mental health is a bill that seeks to introduce training programs for student mental health advisors. The bill mandates non-governmental organizations to provide mental health training programs for the student, in turn, they will receive grants from the state government (California Legislative Information, 2022). This bill is impactful in addressing and preventing mental health issues in schools. Peer-to-peer mental health support services have shown tremendous benefits because students are more comfortable talking to their peers than professional counselors (Gillard, 2019). Providing training to the students who provide mental health support to their peers is likely to enhance their skills and knowledge in providing mental health services to peers. In my future nursing practice, one of my goals is to support programs addressing mental health conditions among children and adolescents. If students receive mental health support from their peers, such incidents might not occur (White et al.,2020). There have been various cases of school shootings, which are primarily related to mental health issues. Therefore, the prevention of mental health conditions and their effects is critical for public health.

The bill if passed into law will a win for the entire nursing profession in the state. NAMI-CA, the American Academy of Pediatrics and other organizations have already endorsed the bill citing its potential to address mental health issues in schools. The bill is a step towards enhancing access to mental health services and support for populations especially vulnerable groups and underserved populations. As an advanced nurse practitioner, my role is to advocate for improved access to quality services and ensure that all populations experience health equity. As such, I see myself participating in policy advocacy programs. As a member of the ANA, I will use the platform to contribute to policy advocacy. I also see myself seeking a leadership position to advance my engagement in policy advocacy.
