Description of the Issue

Nurses are integral to the healthcare system as they function as the main engine running healthcare services. They offer primary care that affects the well-being of a patient and enhances patient recovery. Therefore, nurse shortage is an issue that affects healthcare providers and patients to a great extent. One of the effects is the low quality of service delivery (Drennan & Ross, 2019). Few nurses who cannot offer patients the required services reduce patient satisfaction. There is an urgent need for all healthcare providers to have the correct patient-nurse ratio as they would improve the quality of healthcare services to patients.

Summary of the Two Articles

Gerardi et al., (2018) notes that the future change in healthcare is to increase the proportion nurses with bachelor in nursing by 80%. Limited nurses in a healthcare facility imply that patients will be left to deal with their conditions. Therefore, the authors note that goal of developing promising strategies by creating educated workforce (Marć et al., 2019).

Ricketts and Fraher (2013) comments that the growing medical homes and accountable care organizations need more workers to meet the desired outcome. Acute shortage of human capital in health care always causes a significant effect on the effective flow of health services to the people. These shortages affect not only the achievement of healthcare goals but also impede the acceleration of progress aiming at achieving universal health coverage (Buerhaus, 2021). The authors highlights how regulatory policies and market forces are meeting the raid change in care system hence the need to train and educate more professionals.

Strategies Used to Address the Issue

The solution to the noted problem of nurse shortage could be approached in many ways. One of the ways is by enhancing nurse training. Training nurses to have multiple roles is significant in addressing an acute nurse shortage (Gerardi et al. 2018). The nurses would be assigned other roles they are not specialized in at the facility. Nursing practice is a sensitive profession that depends on the skills and knowledge of the nurse. Skilled nurses can offer healthcare services when needed.

Another solution to the issue is adopting modern technology. The automation process has replaced the manual work that used to be traditional for nurses. The EHRs are in place to support nurses in following up on patient treatment and administering the correct intervention for the well-being of a patient. (Spurlock Jr, 2020) One of the things worsening the issue of nurse shortage is the increased workload that leads to fatigue and then ends up risking patients’ lives. Few nurses would imply that each nurse would have a high workload. The increased workload reduces nurses’ performance, thus lowering healthcare quality.

Conclusion

Nurse shortage is a great menace to patient quality care and safety. There is an urgent need for the leadership team in healthcare to devise effective measures that heighten the solution to this problem. The industry has been fighting these shortages, but they keep changing with time. This has been causing a great threat to patient safety.
