Obesity is a fundamental risk factor for type 2 diabetes because of its effect on the body’s ability to utilize glucose as the primary source of energy. Before diving into an in-depth analysis of the relationship between obesity and diabetes, it is essential to define obesity as the abnormal or excessive fat accumulation of fat that may affect health (World Health Organization, 2021). The recommended measure for obesity is the Body Mass Index (BMI) which is a simple weight-for-height index. In this sense, obese adults have a BMI greater or equal to 30 (≥30 kg/m²). The major risk factors and causes of obesity include an energy imbalance between caloric intake and expenditures facilitated by an increased intake of energy-dense foods, unhealthy diets high in fat and sugars, physical inactivity, and a sedentary lifestyle. Also, the prevailing external factors like a lack of supportive policies, access to processed foods, limited access to physical activity opportunities, and a lack of community-based education programs exacerbate obesity.

Linkage Between Obesity and Diabetes

The relationship between obesity and diabetes relies massively upon the negative consequences of excess body fat on the body’s ability to utilize energy (glucose). According to Cleveland Clinic (2021), people with obesity are likely to develop diabetes due to the condition of having too much glucose in the bloodstream. As stated earlier, one of the causes of obesity is the excess intake of energy-dense foods with plenty of fats and sugars. Coupled with other risk factors for diabetes, including physical inactivity, the presence of excessive, underutilized energy in the bloodstream alters the body’s ability to manage glucose levels. Klein et al. (2021) argue that the presence of an excessive amount of body fat triggers various metabolic abnormalities and diseases, including low plasma (High-density lipoproteins (HDL cholesterol concentrations), insulin resistance, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and prediabetes.

Obesity’s contribution to insulin resistance confirms its association with type 2 diabetes. According to Mayo Clinic (2021), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) manifests through the body’s inability to regulate and use glucose as the primary source of energy. As a result, this condition leads to the presence of too much sugar in the bloodstream, increasing the risk of various disorders, including circulatory, nervous, and immune systems. The common symptoms of type 2 diabetes include increased thirst, fatigue, blurred vision, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, slow-healing sores, unintended weight loss, and increased hunger. Finally, diabetes leads to various complications and comorbidities including eye damage, kidney disease, skin conditions, and neuropathy in the limbs.

The knowledge and awareness of the linkage between obesity and type 2 diabetes can improve self-management interventions, including diet controls and physical activity. Regarding diet controls, access to a healthy diet is a vital strategy for regulating body weight and preventing obesity and type 2 diabetes. Deciding on the right food portions and appropriate calorific values is a point of concern for obese people. Therefore, a daily diet for obese and overweight people should include plenty of vegetables, fruits, calorie-free drinks, clean water, regulate carbohydrates, and proteins, limited fast foods, and sugar-and-sodium-free foods. Further, it is essential to remain physically fit and limit the consumption of red meat, refined grains, and sugar-sweetened beverages.
