Evidence-based Practice and Connection with the Quadruple Aim
Evidence-based practice is a tool for meeting the aim of enhancing patient experience because it informs practice decisions that improve patient outcomes. The healthcare environment experiences many problems that compromise the safety of patients and the quality of care. To solve these issues, nurses and other healthcare workers integrate their practice experience, critical decision-making, and search for evidence to support the identified solutions, leading to evidence-based practice (Melnyk & Raderstorf, 2019). For example, using quality improvement initiatives, a nurse can develop an inquiry into a particular problem affecting patient outcomes in the clinical environment. They would then research sources for the best available evidence to support the quality improvement initiative. The ultimate outcome is quality improvement, leading to a better patient experience.
Similarly, evidence-based practice is the basis of population health improvement through activities that support prevention and positive outcomes for populations. For example, attaining population health and well-being of people requires making changes and taking actions such as patient education to teach populations about measures that support preventive health. Similarly, actions that improve population health outcomes and well-being involve policy changes to address the social determinants of health causing negative health outcomes (Arnetz et al., 2020). The integration of evidence-based practice provides the best practice approach to support the rationale for policy changes and shows that policy approaches have the potential to create the desired change.
Evidence-based practice also has a link with cost-effectiveness in healthcare. For example, healthcare providers develop programs that promote cost-effectiveness. These programs are validated by the best available evidence that supports efficient and effective procedures and systems, while still maintaining quality and ensuring patient safety (Arnetz et al., 2020). One such program that a facility can implement is the use of health information technology such as electronic prescribing that reduces errors, which in turn reduces the risk of long hospital stays, and saves patients and the health systems. Finally, the best evidence combined with experience and expertise is used to identify approaches that promote staff engagement, motivation, and health improvement practices.
Conclusion
The quadruple aim supports quality improvement practices that enhance patient experience and focus on overall positive outcomes for populations. Additionally, the framework seeks to promote cost-effectiveness and health improvement for the healthcare staff. The evidence-based practice supports these aims by acting as the tool and basis for achieving the objectives of the Quadruple Aim.
