  1. Explain how your view of a “patient” has changed and expanded? What are some differences between the assessment of a public health nurse and a clinical nurse?

Initially, I perceived a patient as a passive recipient of healthcare services who relied heavily on professional services from clinical nurses. However, my view has expanded after many interactive opportunities with patients. I have realized that a patient is a significant stakeholder in defining care trajectories by providing first-hand information, enhancing ethical values, and assisting healthcare professionals in individualizing care practices. For instance, a patient’s active involvement in care practices and procedures anchors patient-centered, dignified, and culturally responsive care tenets. Undeniably, achieving and providing dignified, client-oriented, and culturally sensitive care is complex when we perceive patients as passive recipients. I now believe that clinicians can extend patient-centered care to population-centered care by involving communities and patient populations to capitalize on relationships, indigenous knowledge, and socio-cultural contexts that contribute the community resilience and empowerment.

Public health and clinical nurses play a forefront role in safeguarding and promoting population and individual health and wellness. According to Kuo et al. (2020), public healthcare nurses demonstrate various core competencies consistent with public health, including assessing community health needs, collaboration, advocacy, cultural competence, and developing public health improvement programs. When assessing, public health nurses identify, collect data, and evaluate healthcare issues that compromise community health, including infectious and chronic diseases. On the other hand, clinical nurses focus on individual care by assessing patients’ health issues and developing individualized care plans for improving patients’ safety and well-being. Swanson et al. (2020) argue that clinical nurses can collaborate with patients in improving care by building meaningful relationships, acting as outreach professionals, facilitating healthcare programs, and coordinating care. Public health and clinical nurses should collaborate to address health threats, including infectious diseases that compromise individual and community wellness and health.
