Purpose

In this project, you will be observing and reflecting upon two communities in which you are a part of, focusing on how members of the community interact with each other to connect your experiences with wider cultural understandings of the community. The purpose of an autoethnography is to tell a story about a community that you belong to, with a clear theme or themes about the significance of the community-a main point that you want to make about the subculture. You will choose two communities in which you take part in and observe and collect examples of communications among group members, including yourself, as a participant observer.

Tasks (ALREADY COMPLETED AND PROVIDED BELOW)

1. Choose Two Communities to Observe

– College friend group and Hometown friend group

2. Conduct Event Observations and Take Notes

– Documents of both observations and the notes provided below

3. Conduct Interviews

– Documents of both interviews provided below

– The purpose of the interviews are to help gain insight into the perspective of another member of the community. This can offer additional information that can be used to examine your own positionality and provide interesting narrative content for your findings. The interviews and event observation notes should be related.

Paper Format (APA FORMAT, 1200-1500 WORDS)

1. Genre

– Autoethnography

– Authoethnography studies the relationship between oneself and one’s community or culture. It reports the results of a researcher who chooses to explicitly talk about their position in a community that they are studying through observation. It is self-reflective and analytical, studying self and community together.

2. Elements

A. Begins with an engaging narrative or scene from the community.

B. Develops ideas with thick description that includes details of the place, participants, interactions and artifacts describing your own experience within the community.

C. Uses the combined experience, observation, and interview with another community member to draw conclusions about each community. These conclusions might focus on one or more of the following:

– How the community’s interactions, and observations of the group and interviews with a group member, challenge common beliefs or stereotypes that outsiders to the community might hold

– Other themes that emerged that surprised or intrigued you as a member of the community; About your own identity/positionality or regarding the identities of those in the community.

– What the observations and interviews reveal about the community; What are the key take-aways?

Grade Evaluation

1. A focus on a clear theme or themes that you discovered about the significance of each community.

– The autoethnography should tell a story about each community in order to convey something about each community’s beliefs and values. Then the communities should be clearly linked in either shared traits or examined in their opposition.

2. Development of the theme/s based on evidence/details from observation, interviews, and reflection.

– Includes details of place, participants, interactions, and artifacts.

3. Clear and logical structure.

– Themes are organized in a way that develops a path to the conclusion and is appropriate to the genre of autoethnography.

4. Appropriate style and tone.

– Use language in a way that engages undergraduate academic readers with appropriate vocabulary for the research report and audience (a student-run, student-reviewed, and student-published annual academic journal for undergraduates).

Additional Information (FROM THE STUDENT)

Feel free to be as creative as you want with this paper. I provided all of the information from the event observations and interviews from each of my communities, which are a friend group from college and a friend group from my hometown. As long as what is written corresponds with the requirements above in some way, make whatever conclusions you need from the information provided in order to make it fit into the paper accordly. Thank you!
