Aims of the SDG

The no-poverty sustainable development plan consists of seven targets. The first objective is to eradicate extreme poverty among the global population (The Global Goals, 2022). Individuals and families living on less than 1.25 dollars a day are considered victims of extreme poverty. In the second target, the UN aims to reduce poverty in all its dimension by at least half (The Global Goals, 2022). The third objective of the no-poverty SDG is to ensure the effective implementation of social protection programs (The Global Goals, 2022). These programs aim at protecting everyone from vulnerability, social exclusion, and poverty throughout their life course. Unfair resource distributions are the primary driver of the increased gap between the rich and the poor. Consequently, the UN—through this SDG—advocates for equal rights to essential services, ownership, economic resources, and technology (The Global Goals, 2022).

The fifth objective of the no poverty SDG is to enhance global preparedness for economic and social disasters (The Global Goals, 2022). Although nations have dealt with numerous pandemics, the response to these disasters is still wanting. For instance, several health pandemics have occurred throughout history. However, the coronavirus pandemic overwhelmed the current healthcare systems and disrupted the economy. Therefore, building resilience when faced with economic, social, and environmental disasters should be a priority. The last two objectives of the first SDG are to mobilize resources to implement policies in developing countries to end poverty and to create and implement sound policies to empower the poor and women (The Global Goals, 2022). Overall, the no poverty SDG’s objectives address the root causes of poverty to ensure the ultimate elimination of this persistent phenomenon.

Poverty as a Crisis

Poverty is a multifaceted social problem, persisting throughout history. Statistics indicate that over six-hundred-and-ninety-eight million people (nine percent of the global population) live in extreme poverty (less than 1.90 dollars a day). Different governments and healthcare channels have channeled tremendous efforts to end poverty in the past two decades. These efforts yielded positive results, as evidenced by the fifty percent reduction in extreme poverty rates by 2015—however, nearly half of the global population struggles with the most basic needs (Allen et al., 2020). The coronavirus pandemic and the war between Ukraine and Russia led to high inflation rates, reverting efforts to fight poverty from a global perspective.

Poverty adversely affects other critical economic and social sectors, such as education and health. Poor children have limited access to quality education, narrowing down the available economic opportunities (Gallie & Madinga, n.d.). Consequently, these children have a high chance of ending up in poverty, forming a never-ending chain of this phenomena. Similarly, poverty can lead to serious health problems. Poor women have limited access to quality reproductive services—including contraception. This inadequacy significantly contributes to the high pregnancy-related morbidity and mortality rates. Research also indicates that mental health problems like depression and suicide ideation are most common among poor populations. The spread of HIV/AIDS and other STIs is exceptionally high in areas with high poverty rates (Gallie & Madinga, n.d.). Therefore, eliminating poverty will improve the global population’s education and health levels, leading to sustainable development.

Australia-Based Organisation Making Progress toward Reaching the SDG

The Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) was established in 1956 to champion people affected by poverty and inequality at the national level. This organisation operates on the belief that no one should have to live in poverty, and those in this state deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Consequently, ACOSS is committed to ensuring the full realization of human rights by advocating for the inclusivity of vulnerable populations (ACOSS, 2019). Overall, this organisation utilizes funds from the government, membership fees, partner contributions, and donations to eliminate all forms of poverty in Australia.

ACOSS is working to ensure that Australia attains its 2030 targets under the Global Goals by reducing half of the population living in poverty and helping forty percent of the people with the lowest incomes achieve sustainable income growth. In line with these objectives, ACOSS has invested in researching and developing policies to ensure all Australians benefit from a fair social security system, equitable tax system, and full employment opportunities (ACOSS, 2019). ACOSS also advocates for the digital transformation of the Australian economy and service systems to support low-income people.

The priority of ACOSS’s three-year (2019-2022) strategic plan was to ensure that people directly affected by poverty are the primary focus of policy debate and development. The organisation profoundly listens to those affected by poverty, amplifies their voices in public discussion, and provides them with practical, financial, media, and policy support to self–advocate for change (ACOSS, 2019). Recently, the organisation has proactively engaged people from diverse backgrounds as staff, board members, and advisors to ensure that those raising their concerns about poverty do not feel stigmatized (ACOSS, 2019). Indeed, ACOSS has substantially contributed to the fight against poverty in Australia.

The Connection between Nursing and No-Poverty SDG

Poverty is indissolubly connected with global healthcare inequalities. Poverty deprives its victims of human dignity and denies them access to quality healthcare opportunities. People living in poverty are often susceptible to poor health, HIV/AIDS, and malnourishment as they lack basic needs (Schultz, 2020). Moreover, poverty is among the leading causes of mental health issues globally. Poverty affects human development in different ways, such as physical growth, the ability to interact with others, reasoning, cognition, problem-solving skills, creativity, and societal contributions (Schultz, 2020). Nurses can use insights from this SDG to develop and implement policies to increase access to quality healthcare services. Therefore, nurses should be concerned about poverty as a social condition affecting health.

Conclusion

Poverty is a global epidemic, adversely affecting various economic sectors such as health and education. A nurse should prioritize socioeconomic status when developing and implementing health promotion and disease prevention measures. The no poverty Global Goal aims to eliminate extreme poverty, reduce at least fifty percent of the global population living in poverty, ensure fair distribution policies, implement effective social protection systems, mobilize resources in developing countries to support the fight against poverty, ensure equal rights in accessing social services, and advocate for policies that support vulnerable populations. The ACOSS is a critical national advocate for poverty alleviation in Australia. Fighting poverty is no longer an option but a necessity to ensure sustainability.
