Throughout this program, I have had my assumptions about what a nurse with a doctorate in nursing practice can and should do repeatedly challenged. Understanding the scope of practice and the possibility of leadership as a DNP-prepared nurse was one of the primary areas where my perspective was challenged. I better understood the significance of serving in leadership roles within healthcare organizations, pushing for policy changes, and affecting healthcare outcomes on a systemic level. The course emphasized the importance of DNPs’ advanced clinical skills and strong leadership and management talents to drive change and improve patient care.

Furthermore, as a DNP-prepared nurse, my thinking was challenged in incorporating evidence-based practice into daily decision-making. I learned about the importance of research and how to use current information to enhance and improve clinical practice. This seminar stressed the importance of being current on new research, critically evaluating evidence and putting research findings into practice to improve patient outcomes.

Furthermore, this course pushed my thinking about interprofessional collaboration and its impact on healthcare delivery. I better understood the need for collaboration, clear communication, and shared decision-making in providing patient-centered care. Due to my experiences participating in multidisciplinary dialogue and realizing the benefits of collaboration with other healthcare professionals, my comprehension of the potential that a nurse who has completed a DNP program possesses as a team member and prospective leader has increased.

Because of this new information, I am ready to work as a DNP nurse. This education has given me the information and abilities to comprehend and work within complex healthcare systems, encourage positive change, and successfully direct interdisciplinary teams. I have taught myself to think critically and incorporate new research findings into my work as they become available to deliver the most excellent quality of care possible to my patients. These efforts will help me offer the patients the highest standard of care.

Taking this course has instilled in me a sense of obligation to contribute to the growth of the nursing profession to fulfill my role as a nurse who holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. My motivation for pursuing a career in healthcare research, quality improvement, and policy advocacy comes from a deep-seated longing to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Undoubtedly, this course has pushed me to my limits and given me a more well-rounded understanding of what it means to be a DNP-level nurse. This experience has prepared me to function at the DNP level as a competent leader, advocate, and giver of care founded on evidence.
