Assignment: NRS 493 Week 3 PICOT Question Paper

Assessment Description

Review your problem or issue and the study materials to formulate a PICOT (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome and Time) question for your capstone project change proposal. A PICOT question starts with a designated patient population in a particular clinical area and identifies clinical problems or issues that arise from clinical care. The intervention used to address the problem must be a nursing practice intervention. Include a comparison of the nursing intervention to a patient population not currently receiving the nursing intervention, and specify the timeframe needed to implement the change process. Formulate a PICOT question using the PICOT format (provided in the assigned readings) that addresses the clinical nursing problem.

NRS 493 PICOT Question Paper

            Patient fall management and prevention is challenging and overwhelming for many healthcare organizations (Vaishya & Vaish, 2020).  Utilization of the PICOT question is essential in fostering the search for evidence to deal with nursing issues such as patient falls. The purpose of this paper is to create a PICOT question for this capstone change project, which focuses on the management and prevention of falls among elderly patients admitted to nursing homes.

Creation of PICOT Question

The proposed PICOT question for this project is;

 Among elderly patients admitted to nursing homes (P), does education on fall management and prevention (I) compared to no intervention (C) prevent and minimize falls by 30% (O) in 12 months (T)?

PICOT ProblemEvidence-Based Solution               Evidence-based practice (EBP) is essential in finding the best existing evidence to address a given issue, leading to better patient outcomes by ensuring safe, quality, and affordable care (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2021). EBP can be used in this capstone project to assist in obtaining appropriate evidence to support the evidence-based solution of providing education to help in managing and preventing falls in nursing homes. Nursing Intervention               The proposed nursing intervention to address falls among elderly patients in nursing homes is fall management and prevention education. According to Chidume (2021), this intervention is expected to enhance the awareness and knowledge of elderly patients and healthcare providers in the identification of fall threats and enable timely preventive actions. Patient Care               Effective patient care is crucial in preventing falls among patients (Røyset et al., 2019). Proper patient care will ensure all elderly patients admitted to nursing homes are given good treatment and stable to prevent them from falling.    Health care Agency                Healthcare agencies play various crucial roles in the healthcare system including managing individual and population health through different activities. In this project, responsible healthcare agencies need to ensure creative ways to control or prevent falls among older people in nursing homes. Nursing Practice                This project is expected to impact nursing practice in significant ways. The project is expected to help nurses with more insights and awareness to deal with rising cases of patient falls (Røyset et al., 2019). Successful implementation is also expected to reduce nursing workload by reducing the number of fall incidences.

Describe nursing intervention

               The proposed nursing intervention to address falls among elderly patients in nursing homes is the provision of fall management and prevention education. This intervention is expected to increase the involvement of patients in fall prevention strategies and enhance awareness and knowledge of elderly patients in the identification of fall threats and enable timely prevention (Ong et al., 2021). The content of education will be anchored on the standards of health behavior change. The messages would include strategies for fall prevention tailored to every patient including instructions to adjust home hazards, return to usual function, engage in exercise based on the individual capability, and how ask for assistance needed for personal care (Heng et al., 2022). Ultimately, education should facilitate the potential, opportunity, and inspiration for elderly patients to engage in fall prevention in nursing homes.

Conclusion Entailing Summary of Clinical Problem and Patient Outcome

            Patient falls among elderly patients admitted to nursing homes are widespread and pose remarkable health concerns in the US health system. Patient falls are linked to various adverse implications such as high mortality rates, high cost of care, disabilities, psychological and physical discomforts, longer hospital stay days, and loss of productivity. Implementation of fall prevention education is expected to increase the involvement of patients in fall prevention strategies and enhance awareness and knowledge of elderly patients in the identification of fall threats and enable timely preventive actions. As a result, the intervention is anticipated to enhance the quality of life and health outcomes among elderly patients admitted to nursing homes.
