While working on her normal shift in labor and delivery, Sue is in charge of a student nurse who will graduate in two weeks. Sue assigns this nurse to the newly admitted patient with gestational diabetes. The patient started having contractions about 2 hours ago that are now 2‒3 minutes apart and last approximately 10‒15 seconds.

Develop a 700-word self-reflective report on Benner’s novice to expert model, describing where you fall on the continuum. In addition, describe where Sue and the student nurse fall on this continuum. Include an explanation as to why you placed each person in the specific area you did on the continuum. Benner’s Novice to Expert Model

Benner’s novice-to-expert model outlines how a person acquires new skills and knowledge from the novice stage to the expert stage. According to the model, a nurse passes through five levels of proficiency: novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert. Development through these stages is affected by clinical experience, and length of working time in the profession (Fukada, 2018). In the novice stage, the nurse has no background practical experience but only theoretical knowledge. In the advanced beginner stage, the nurse still requires the assistance of experienced nurses in providing patient care. Advanced beginner nurses focus on completing all ordered treatments and procedures rather than providing individualized nursing care. The nurse in the competent stage demonstrates efficiency, coordination, and confidence in their actions (Murray et al., 2019). Proficient nurses exhibit new abilities for changing situations and demonstrate a holistic understanding, which improves the nurse’s decision-making. Lastly, nurses in the expert stage demonstrate critical thinking skills that they apply in planning patient care consistent with a patient’s conditions, concerns, and needs.

Self-Reflection

Based on the novice to expert model, I would fall into the proficient stage. In this stage, a nurse exhibits new abilities for changing situations. Proficient nurses perceive situations as wholes instead of chopped-up parts or aspects (Ozdemir, 2019). I have been working as a registered nurse for seven years. As a proficient nurse, I understand a situation as a whole since I perceive its meaning in terms of long-term goals.  Furthermore, I learn from experience the typical events that I should expect in a given situation and how I should modify plans in response to these events. I can also identify when the anticipated typical situation fails to materialize.

Where Sue and the Student Nurse Fall On This Continuum

Sue falls into the competent stage. Competence is exhibited by a nurse who has been on the job in the same or similar situations for two to three years. The nurse demonstrates efficiency, is coordinated, and has confidence in their actions. Sue has been working in labor and delivery for three years and exhibits confidence when providing care to women in labor.  In the competence stage, nurses invent new procedures and generate new clinical knowledge alongside learned procedures for managing patient care while learning ethical behaviors (Ozdemir, 2019). On the other hand, the student nurse falls into the novice stage of the continuum. Novice nurses have only theoretical knowledge but no background practical experience. Besides, they have no information on how to transfer new knowledge and skills to their applications when they encounter unique situations (Ozdemir, 2019)]. The student nurse has minimal experience in the situations in which she is expected to perform. The novice also lacks the confidence to exhibit safe practice and needs continuous verbal and physical cues.

Personalized Nursing Theory or Model to Address the Care Needed For the Patient

Kolcaba’s Theory of Comfort can be applied to address the patient’s care needs. According to the theory, comfort exists in three forms: relief, ease, and transcendence. Thus, when the specific patient’s comfort needs are met, the patient experiences comfort in the sense of relief (Lin et al., 2022). In this case, Sue and the student nurse should assess the comfort needs of the patient with gestational diabetes in labor. They should also identify and implement appropriate nursing interventions that will promote patient comfort during labor and delivery, which will in turn promote a positive experience for the patient. Promoting comfort will alleviate the patient’s anxieties related to labor, which will lead to the patient getting into transcendence (Peterson & Bredow, 2019). Transcendence is a state of comfort in which the patient will be able to rise above her challenges, in this case, pain from contractions.

Conclusion

Benner’s novice-to-expert model is based on how a nurse develops nursing knowledge, skills, clinical competence, and comprehension of patient care through theoretical training and experiential learning from the novice stage to the expert stage. I fall into the proficient stage since I understand situations holistically and apply holistic decision-making. Sue falls into the competence stage, while the student nurse falls into the novice stage.
