Assignment: NSGCB 416 Final Reflection
Nursing programs play a critical role in teaching nurses the act of patient care using various frameworks such as human caring and cultural competence. This class has played an important role in training me on how to accomplish the goal of applying critical thinking and professional knowledge to patient outcomes and healthcare systems. I have learned how to use various nursing frameworks in different patient situations and work environment situations to improve patient outcomes and work efficiency and output. It is important to note that the nursing theories and frameworks learned in this class will be applied in everyday practice in different ways to help enhance the provision of holistic and high-quality care to patients. One of the ways I will apply nursing theory is through patient assessment, which will be theory-guided. As such, I will be able to focus on all the aspects, such as the spiritual, cultural, psychosocial, and physical health aspects. I will also apply nursing theory by focusing on the formulation of individualized care plans. Theories such as Orem’s self-care deficit theory will be used to identify areas in which individual patients need help and formulate intervention plans as appropriate (Peterson & Bredow, 2019).

This course offered a good learning experience related to nursing theory and its application in different situations. Therefore, one of the assignments that I found particularly beneficial was the assignment which entailed reflection on Benner’s Novice to Expert model to explore where I fall on the continuum. This was particularly helpful since, through the exploration of this theory, I was able to know where I fall so that I work my way up the ladder. Based on the novice to expert model, I would fall into the proficient stage. In this stage, a nurse exhibits new abilities for changing situations. Proficient nurses perceive situations as wholes instead of chopped-up parts or aspects (Ozdemir, 2019). I was also able to explore other cases to identify the various stages of the novice to expert model, where others fall, and what entails each stage or phase.
