Theory-Practice Gap
Fundamentals of Nursing Models, Theories, and Practice discusses the theory-practice gap in detail in many chapters. As you have read throughout the course, there is an ongoing discussion about the connection between theory and practice and the application in day-to-day nursing activities. This reflection is designed to illustrate that although there may be a gap, other factors play an important role in decision-making and each aspect of theory, research, and practice experience are integral to well-rounded patient care.
Review Figure 1.4, “Correlation: Education, Science and Practice,” in Fundamentals of Nursing Models, Theories, and Practice.
Think of a scenario in which theory, research, and practice interact to create positive patient outcomes and answer the following:
Describe the chosen theory, research, and practice guideline or standard.
Explain the relationship between the three and discuss the role each plays in quality patient care in the scenario.

There has been a debate for some time regarding the connection between theory and practice as well as the application of theory in practice. Indeed, there are still gaps which still exist between theory and practice as some of the assertions of various theories have not been appropriately implemented in practice. Nonetheless, each aspect of theory research and practice is integral to well-rounded and complete patient care. There are scenarios in which theory, research, and practice interact to create a positive patient outcome. The chosen theory is Kolcaba’s theory of comfort. According to this theory, comfort is a fundamental need of every human being for transcendence, ease, and relief, which arises from stressful healthcare situations (McKenna et al., 2018). Hence comfort can foster health-seeking behaviors in patients, their family members as well as health practitioners. The chosen research is the role of comfort on self-seeking behaviors conducted on patients receiving hemodialysis. The practice guideline is the use of hemodialysis treatments for patients with renal failure (Vaidya & Aeddula.,2021).

The three are related, and each has a role to play in the quality of patient care in the scenario. Comfort delivery is an important aspect of holistic care since it looks at the environmental, interpersonal, social, spiritual, and physical aspects. The theory promotes quality through the use of assumptions such as human beings responding to situations holistically and that comfort is a key outcome needed. Therefore, the use of this theory led to positive outcomes among the patients with renal failure who were made to undergo hemodialysis, an indication of an interaction between the three (Estridge et al., 2018).
There are gaps that can exist. For example, while there may be research that supports the use of a practice standard, there may be a lack of usable theory, which undermines the theoretical aspects of the practice strategies to improve patient outcomes. In case there is an absence of one of the aspects, then the best course of action is to apply the other two, but with caution (McKenna et al., 2018). For example, if there is research and theory supporting it, but there is a lack of practice guidelines, the two can be used in isolation but with the focus of formulating a practice guideline.
Theory Application
Throughout this course, various nursing theories have been explored, and their possible application in various clinical situations. Therefore, one of my biggest takeaways from this course is that clinical practice plays a critical role in generating research questions as well as the knowledge required for theory development. Indeed, most of the nursing theories were developed by theorists who were actively involved in patient care, hence acquired substantial experience from the clinical practice or scenarios. As part of the biggest takeaway, research also plays an important role in the process of theory development by offering appropriate guidance to the practice methods. In addition, the theory also helps in guiding research and improving practice (Saleh, 2018). The implication is that there is a special connection between research, practice, and theory, as they also contribute and play big roles in the development of evidence-based practice used in improving patient outcomes.
The knowledge gained in the course will help me apply theory in practice in the future. The implication is that I need to continue studying the existing nursing theories, develop an adequate understanding of them, and find out how they can be applied in various clinical situations (McKenna et al., 2018). I will use clinical judgment, experience, and collaboration to pick the right theory for a particular clinical practice situation and ensure that the theory’s aspects are well applied.
