Assignment: NSGCB 45 Competency 2 Sample

Evidence-based practice is important for the realization of optimum outcomes in nursing practice and healthcare. Nurses engage in research to generate evidence that inform nursing practice. Nurses should be competent in selecting effective research designs and methods to answer their research questions. The purpose of this paper is to explore the methods that will be adopted for the proposed project.

Research Question and Type of Research

The proposed research aims at examining the impact of teletrauma on clinical outcomes and provider experiences with its use. The research question that would guide the investigation is; what is the impact of teletrauma on clinical outcomes and the provider experiences with its use? Researchers can either adopt qualitative or quantitative designs to investigate their clinical problems. A quantitative design will be used in this research. This design mainly focuses on obtaining objective, numerical data. It also tests the existing theories or hypotheses. The obtained data will be highly accurate since it would provide insights into cause-effect relationship between teletrauma and clinical outcomes (Harvey & Land, 2021). The design is appropriate for the research since it evaluates the existing theories about the effectiveness of teletrauma in healthcare. The researcher will not be deeply involved in the interaction with the participants during data collection, which makes the quantitative method the most appropriate.

Major Steps

The quantitative method has several steps. The first step is deciding on the study question. Here, the researcher formulates a research question that should be manageable, clear, and specific. The research question focuses the whole investigation. Researchers may develop broad and specific research questions, which will guide the development of the objectives and methods for the investigation (Harvey & Land, 2021).

The second step is doing a literature review. A literature review helps researchers to learn more about what others have found in the topic of interest. It also helps identify the existing gaps in knowledge and practice that the current investigation should address. Researchers also use it to establish the need for the research and their interest on it. The third step in quantitative method is selecting the specific design that would guide the investigation (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2021). The researcher must select from the different types of quantitative study designs an approach that aligns with their study topic and objectives.

The other step is determining the sample size. An adequate sample size is important to ensure reliability and validity of the results. The sample also determines the generalizability of the obtained results. The next step is conducting the actual research where the researchers interact with the participants to acquire the information that they need. This is followed by data analysis where the researcher is interested in making meaning of the voluminous data obtained from the participants. The analysis also provides information that can either accept or reject the developed hypothesis or theory. The last step is communicating the findings from the study (Gray & Grove, 2020). Disseminating results is important to create awareness among other healthcare providers and stimulate interest among them on exploring the topic further.

Specific Approach

The proposed research will adopt a correlational study design. A correlational study design is an approach that enables the comparison of two or more variables. The design does not involve any form of control or manipulation of the independent variable. Instead, there is the analysis of the relationship existing between the independent and dependent variables. Correlational study design provides either a positive or negative correlation. Positive correlation is associated with a decrease or increase in both variables at the same time (Grove & Gray, 2022). Negative correlation occurs when an inverse relationship between two variables exists.

The correlational study design is appropriate for this investigation because of several reasons. First, the research will be interested in observing the relationship between the use of teletrauma and changes in clinical outcomes. The clinical outcomes will be the dependent variables while teletrauma will be the independent variable. The research will also not aim at any form of control or manipulation of the variables (Bloomfield & Fisher, 2019; Harvey & Land, 2021). Methods to data collection such as surveys and questionnaires will be used for data collection. It is anticipated that the selected design will facilitate easy collection of data to inform the clinical need of teletrauma.

Potential Data

The potential data for the project will include those related to clinical outcomes such as mortality rate, morbidity, hospital length of stay, costs of care, patient satisfaction, and subsequent hospital readmission rates. The other potential data will be healthcare providers’ experiences with teletrauma.

Analyzing and Interpreting Data

Analyzing and interpreting data will inform the research question. The data will enable the determination whether the methods used answered the research question. Analysis will also identify gaps or issues in the tools and methods utilized that will affect the validity and reliability of outcomes. Analysis and interpretation will also provide insights into the similarities or differences between the project and previous investigations on the topic (Gray & Grove, 2020; LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2021).

Conclusion

The research will adopt a quantitative method. The specific design will be the correlational study design. The potential data for the project will include that related to the clinical outcomes and provider experiences with teletrauma. Analyzing and interpreting data will provide insights into the effectiveness of the adopted methods in answering the research question.
