Again, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) (2022) asserts that healthcare quality emanates from safe, effective, patient-centered, timely or prompt, efficient, and equitable care services to patients. Variables like communication, technology, shared decision-making, collaboration, laws, regulations, and policies affect the overall delivery of quality patient-centered, and safe care. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate factors that impact and influence quality, safe, and patient-centered care.

Technology

Technology is a core aspect of modern healthcare because of the benefits that it provides to all stakeholders. Technology enhances efficiency, improves quality, and reduces the overall cost burden of healthcare. Technology affects patient safety by allowing seamless communication and sharing of health information through electronic health records (EHRs) among different care providers and organizations to enhance accuracy and reduce medical errors (Atasoy et al., 2019). Big data collected in health care allows health providers to understand and learn novel and cutting-edge techniques and trends in care provisions. Access to big data enables clinicians to use appropriate preventive approaches more effectively and reduce adverse events and fatalities. Technology enhances patient-centered care through better communication among providers and patients through patient portals, telehealth, and even EHRs. Providers access patient health information to make and implement tailored approaches that meet individual needs (Davidson et al., 2022). Through technology, patients have access to the best diagnostic tools and equipment, new treatment modalities, and methods that lead to fast healing and less discomfort.

Communication

Communication is critical to offering better, safe, quality, and patient-centered care. Effective communication between patients and their healthcare teams during the entire treatment process ensures that patients and their caregivers participate in the care plan and make sound decisions and choices. Healthcare providers must develop effective communication skills that empathize and enhance their understanding of issues affecting patients. For instance, communication tools like Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation (SBAR) are critical for nurses during handover to reduce possible medication errors and missed care occasions (Choi et al., 2022). Communication ensures that nurses reduce and prevent the occurrence of errors in their practice settings. Through effective communication, patients attain quality and patient-centered care since providers can understand their needs and tailor interventions based on them. Again, having respectful communication between health professionals and patients reduces the chances of indecision, boosts patient commitment to developed care plans, improves patient adherence to treatment regimens, and improves overall social support for patient safety and satisfaction.

Collaboration

Healthcare providers play complementary roles and work together based on shared responsibilities to generate solutions to care problems and issues. Collaboration is a critical attribute among healthcare providers as it improves decision-making and the delivery of safe and patient-centered care. Providers work in teams like during surgical procedures and in emergency departments (EDs) to deliver quality and safe patient care amidst concerns and high anxiety levels among patients and their families. Collaboration between medical professionals improves patient safety as it reduces and prevents errors through shared decision-making by leveraging shared patient information (Rosen et al., 2018). Adverse events occur when healthcare providers like physicians and pharmacists as well as nurses do not collaborate and know what one prescribes and their effects on patient’s health. Inter-professional collaboration is a critical component of delivering not just quality but also patient-centered care interventions.

Shared Decision-Making

Under a shared decision-making model, physicians and other healthcare providers work together with patients to attain an evidence-informed and value-based approach to care delivery. Laws, regulations, and policies affect the delivery of safe, quality, and patient-centered since all actions by healthcare organizations and providers must be founded on legal frameworks and structures. For instance, the enactment of the Affordable Care Act and 21st Century CURES Act are critical legislations that impact the quality and safety of patient care. For instance, through the ACA 2010, over 20 million Americans got health insurance coverage that they did not have before (Davidson et al., 2022). As such, policies, even at the organizational level, have significant effects on the quality of care and patient safety. These variables like technology, communication, and laws as well as policies are inevitable and nurses must ensure that they adhere to them to offer quality and patient-centered care. The interactions among the different players in healthcare demonstrate the need for providers to understand and deploy effective approaches that focus on reducing disease burden and improving the quality of care.
