Pre-Proposal Information:
“The psychological research topic I have selected is mental health. Mental health entails emotional, social and psychological welfare, and has implications on how an individual feels, thinks and their consequent actions. It also affects how people handle stress, make decisions and their relationship with others. The CDC reports that mental illness is one of the most prevalent health issues in the United States. It is estimated that one in five American adults deal with mental illness and one in five youth have had to contend with serious mental conditions. Reports also indicate that one in 25 American adults deal with a serious mental health condition including major depression and schizophrenia (CDC, 2023). Various factors lead to mental illness including adverse childhood experiences, biological factors, alcohol abuse, isolation, and experiences concerning chronic health issues.
The planned search for literature on the mental health topic involves various steps. These entail defining the research question, planning the research and review, searching the scholarly sources, evaluating the sources found and managing the findings. There are various psychiatry databases important for investigating the topic including PsycINFO, Scopus, Embase, ProQuest Central, PubMed, CINAHL, PsycArticles, Medline, DSM-5, and Psychology database. Various search terms will be used in this research and include social problems, anxiety, emotions, neurobehavioral manifestations, mental health, stress, alcohol abuse, and mental health services. Other terms that can be used in combination include clinical trials and randomized trials. There are various strategies that a researcher can use to narrow down the findings to the most relevant primary research. For instance, one can use a component strategy in which the initial variable in the study is broken down into small sections. One can also use the methodology strategy such as qualitative or quantitative articles. Another strategy is relationship strategy such as the cause/effect of mental illness in adolescents.”
