Advance Nursing Practice

Nurses are guided by theories in their clinical practices irrespective of their specializations. The use of theories in nursing practices was started by Florence Nightingale, who founded modern nursing. This discussion will include my beliefs about how the nursing practice is influenced by theories, the value that accrues to an advanced practice registered nurse for using a model for practice, and my stand regarding the philosophy of advanced practice nursing.     

I believe that the nursing theory influences nursing practice significantly. In particular, nurse practitioners are guided by the theory to influence patients’ health and well-being positively. The theory informs the nurses in implementing evidence-based practice in their care delivery, providing quality and safe patient care (Alejandro, 2017). Therefore, incorporating the nursing theory-guided practice into the nursing activities boosts the quality of care delivered to the clients, thus moving the profession forward.

 As an advanced practice registered nurse, I value using a practice model since the theory is an integral part of the research process. Therefore, theory acts as a framework for providing nursing researchers with guidance and perspective to their studies (Jensen, 2019). The study findings, in turn, provide nurse practitioners with evidence-based information to be incorporated into their clinical practices. Thus, theory primarily focuses on improving the nursing profession by positively influencing patients’ health and quality of life.

My advanced practice nursing philosophy has not changed. I support theorist Virginia Henderson’s philosophy as described in the “Needs Theory.” Nurses should focus on the holistic care of patients (Jasemi et al., 2017). They should prioritize identifying patient’s needs and work towards addressing them.
