Leadership capacity is the ability to change the way of leading to create more effective ways to achieve the required results. It requires a leader to understand their strengths and weaknesses, the various skills and how they may affect the followers, and the results (Heinen et al., 2019). This discussion focuses on my leadership strengths and developmental opportunities, the difference between leadership strengths and management skills, how I can integrate emotional intelligence into my leadership identity, and its effects on my followers.

My two strongest leadership competencies are collaboration/teamwork promotion and inspiring/motivating others. I firmly believe that synergy gives better results and emphasizes collaboration and teamwork. An excellent example of how I use teamwork and collaboration is by creating teams and assigning roles to members best suited for the roles. I also believe leaders rise by inspiring and motivating others to do better and do better. For instance, I motivate good performance and improvement using rewards and recognition, thus inspiring my team to do better. My areas of improvement in leadership are communication and being overly critical. Being a results-oriented leader, I sometimes notice minor mistakes which may not be necessary. I am also working on making my communication more powerful and prolific.

According to Kragt and Day (2020), leadership strengths differ from management behaviors in that leadership focuses on the ability to motivate and inspire, while management focuses on controlling a group. Similarly, my leadership strengths differ from management skills and behaviors. For instance, I collaborate and promote teamwork as a leadership style, whereas management behavior would mean I give insights and ideas as orders. Additionally, I strive to inspire and motivate my team as a leader rather than using management skills to push for results.

Emotional intelligence in leadership is the ability to understand and manage individual emotions and recognize and control others’ emotions and perspectives (Gomez-Leal et al., 2022). I will integrate emotional intelligence into my leadership identity by using self-awareness to recognize my emotions before communicating with others and social skills and empathy to understand others’ emotions. Thus, my followers will, in turn, develop the confidence to communicate effectively and collaborate successfully, thus improving interactions and results.

Developing leadership capacity requires the identification of leadership strengths and gaps and strategizing on addressing the gaps. Leadership strengths differ from management skills. Emotional intelligence is a vital competency for all leaders.
