The Setting

The project will be conducted in an acute care setting on a medical-surgical floor. The project will focus on patients with common or more generalized diagnoses and patients that are scheduled for surgery or recovering from surgery. All the patients admitted on a medical-surgical floor will be included in the project.

Problem Description

The surgical environment is characterized by many potential risks such as high chances of infections, patient falls, medication errors, and hospital readmissions. As such, there is need for sensitive vigilance to avert these risks from affecting patients. Many factors contribute to these potential health risks in the surgical environment. One of the factors is the lack of education among the patients (Swearingen & Wright, 2019). Recovering from surgical procedures is highly intimidating. Therefore, patients should be educated about what is expected during the hospital stay period and the expectation before and post-discharge.

Effect of the Problem

Failure to provide education to the patients on a medical-surgical floor can lead to poor clinical outcomes, reduced quality of life, more hospital stay days, and increased cost of healthcare. However, when the patients are properly educated, they are empowered to make informed decisions on their care and be responsible for their safety (Swearingen & Wright, 2019).  Ultimately, surgical patients can benefit from education through knowledge acquisition, improved self-esteem, enhance self-concept, enhanced self-care, enhanced pain control, minimized disruption in daily activities, increased satisfaction with care, improve compliance with medication, and reduced anxiety (Tweed et al., 2021).

Significance of the Problem and its Implication for Nursing Practice

Nurses are the healthcare providers who bear the greatest burden of patient care. Empowering patients on a medical-surgery floor through education is critical in increasing their capacity for self-care by improving their knowledge of the appropriate steps to take to remain safe during hospital stay days and after discharge (Refai et al., 2018). Enhancing patient safety is critical in avoiding many health complications that are widespread in a medical-surgical floor. Reduction in health complications is critical for nurses in reducing the workload and associated fatigue and burnout. Ultimately, nurses will be satisfied with their work.

Proposed Solution

Patients on the medical-surgical floor are vulnerable to myriad health problems. This project proposes awareness of the significance of patient education throughout their hospital stay and their understanding of it before and after discharge on a medical-surgical floor. The education program is intended to empower patients to make informed decisions on their care and be responsible for their safety (Swearingen & Wright, 2019).

Conclusion

The surgical environment is characterized by myriad potential health risks, which warrants sensitive vigilance to avoid such health-related risks from affecting patients. This project seeks to provide awareness of the significance of patient education throughout their hospital stay and their understanding of it before and after discharge on a medical-surgical floor. The intervention will empower patients to make the right decisions on their care and be responsible for their safety.
