Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is an interminable chronic condition where the colon and rectum become inflamed. Small ulcers can develop on the colon’s lining and bleed (Tripathi & Feuerstein, 2019). The essay seeks to explain pathophysiology changes in ulcerative colitis disorder. In addition, it aims to discuss the patient education that would need to be included in describing the condition.

Ulcerative colitis usually begins in the rectum. The condition may remain localized to the rectum or extend proximally, sometimes involving the entire colon. Thus, ulcerative colitis is a continuous inflammation of the colon that affects the colon’s innermost lining (Schniers et al., 2019). As such, the pathophysiology changes of ulcerative colitis involve defects in the epithelial barrier, immune response, leukocyte recruitment, and colon microflora. The oscillation occurs in the epithelial barrier in colonic mucin, causing tight junctions and leading to increased uptake of luminal antigens (Kaur & Goggolidou, 2020).

In ulcerative colitis, the immune system mistakes the friendly bacteria in the colon, aiding digestion, as a harmful infection, leading to the colon and rectum being inflamed. The condition does not typically affect the small intestine. But it can affect the lower section of the ileum, changing the cells on the colon lining, making them die and come off, thus opening sores (Schniers et al., 2019).

Patient Education

Patient education for individuals having the disorders would include advice to the patient to be safe with medicines. They should not take anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen. They must consult their physicians before taking other medication or natural health products. It is advised the patients need to eat healthy foods. Healthy foods include fruit, vegetables, whole-grain bread, low-fat dairy products, beans, lean meat, and fish. They should not eat foods that make worsen their symptoms (Keshteli et al., 2019). Ulcerative colitis is a long-term condition where the colon and rectum become inflamed. The pathophysiology changes may occur in the epithelial barrier, immune response, leukocyte recruitment, and colon microflora. The patient education for individuals with the disorder may include educating them to be keen on medicines and eat healthy food that may not aggravate their symptoms.
