Nursing theories are pivotal in guiding clinical research and patient care practices. The sound evidence from research forms the basis for targeted practice guidelines. Nursing theory-guided care interventions are associated with resultant improvement in the quality and safety of patient care (Younas et al., 2019). Orem’s Self-Care theory is an example of nursing theories that have been integrated into various aspects of patient care with associated positive outcomes. This theory advocates for patient self-efficacy and self-management through engagement in appropriate activities that maintain,  restore, or restore good health (Khademian et al., 2020). The patient is proactively involved in their care in contrast to the traditional healthcare professional paternalism. The nurse’s role according to this theory is to enlighten patients on self-care practices and provide guidance and support. Gaps in self-care practices are identified and compensated by the nurses until the patient can regain their self-efficacy and self-management abilities. Positive behavior change is necessary for self-efficacy and self-management and should be fostered among patients.

Orem’s Self-Care theory has been integrated into the management of chronic conditions that require lifelong management. This is based on theory-guided research and practice standards. Hypertension, for example, has practice guidelines in place that dictates specific self-management practices in addition to conventional clinical care. Some of these practices include adherence to antihypertensive medications, engaging in regular exercises, alcohol intake and smoking cessation, weight control, blood pressure self-monitoring, healthy diet, and attending scheduled checkups ( Melaku et al., 2022). Following these recommendations results in better patient outcomes including achievement of blood pressure control and reduced risk of disease progression and associated complications.

The above scenario posits the role of nursing theories, research, and practice standards in patient care. The effectiveness of Orem’s Self-Care theory guided targeted research that resulted in the appropriate practices. The nursing theory identifies gaps in patient care whereas research evaluates the effectiveness and safety of interventions to address existing healthcare issues. Gaps in the translation of theory to practice should be identified and appropriate strategies formulated through evidence-based studies. In absence of research or practice guidelines, care should be based on expertise from past experiences with measures put in place to design and implement evidence-based practices.
