Strategic Plan: Reducing Obesity in the Community

            Obesity is a multifaceted problem that keeps on changing with time. This variation implies that empirical studies done by authors in the last five or ten years cannot be effective in solving the current problem of obesity (Skinner et al., 2018). The current change in lifestyle is one of the major causes of the increasing rates of obesity in the US. The nature of the problem calls for new research studies that would use the current data to examine the problem in real-time. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to develop a strategic plan that will aid in reducing tobacco use among adults.

            The prevalence rate of the disease in the US was 41.9% between 2017 and 2020. Scholars argue that the rate will increase in the future if stringent measures are placed to solve the problem. While the prevalence rate in 1999 increased from 30.5% to 41.9% in 2020, the case of severe obesity increased from 4.7% to 9.7% (Zhang et al., 2019). The increase in the prevalence and severity of obesity implies that people dying from obesity-related diseases like stroke, type 2 diabetes, and cancer are also increasing. The statistics are worrying in the US as it does not only increase the mortality rate within the community but also exerts pressure on the healthcare systems within the community.

Potential Monetary Cost of Obesity in the US

            The estimated yearly cost of obesity in the US was $173 billion in 2019. The amount will increase in the future because of the increasing number of people diagnosed with obesity within the community (Zhang et al., 2019). Besides, the medical cost for adults with obesity was $1826 higher than for those with a healthy weight. This data implies that the increase in the prevalence rate of obesity strains the healthcare system by increasing the cost of care.

Advanced Practice Roles and Management Strategies

            Increasing awareness of obesity and control programs reduces obesity in the community. Many people within the community have poor eating habits that affect their weight leading to obesity. Children diagnosed with obesity would as well grow into adulthood, with obesity increasing the number of people suffering from the disease within the community (Owen et al., 2018). Carrying out media campaigns on the issue of obesity would enlighten parents and adults to devise measures of reducing weight by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Increasing health promotion within the community carried out by skilled nurses would as well enlighten the community about effective activities that could be significant in managing weight.

            Positive behavioral support of any kind for adults and youths suffering from obesity would effectively reduce their weight. Behavioral support from professionals face-to-face or through phone calls can influence an individual’s weight loss (Specchia et al., 2018). On the same note, a physician’s advice could also motivate obese to adopt healthy eating habits that lead to weight loss. Many adults and youth need proper advice and motivation to maintain a healthy living goal.

Key Community and Social Resources

            The healthcare centers in the community are significant sources to spearhead information about obesity in the community. The healthcare centers can organize their nurses to undertake health promotion plans in the communities that enlighten the people on the health risks caused by obesity (Specchia et al., 2018). The target population would be youths and adults who are likely to adopt a poor eating habit. The community’s leadership could also positively impact the success of the promotion plan as they can stamp authority on the significance of adopting healthy living.

Changes or Enhancements in Community-related Services

            Healthcare centers in various US communities have low health promotion programs because of inadequate funding. This issue prompts nurse professionals to wait for patients at the facility while there is a high need to meet the needs of the patients in their homes (Owen et al., 2018). Approaching the health promotion plan by meeting the target population in their homes would relay the importance of the health issue to the target population. Besides, other people might treat media campaigns as insignificant, but an approach to their homes would allow the message to reach many people within the community.

Strategic Plan

            The plan to solve the increasing rates of obesity in the community is through a health promotion plan where selected nurses would undertake a door-to-door awareness (Specchia et al., 2018). The plan would go for three weeks and cover all the homesteads in the community. The goals for the plan would be;

  1. By the end of the health promotion exercise, adults in the community should be able to state the health risks of obesity.
  2. By the end of the exercise, adults involved in the health promotion will be able to identify and explain at least three factors that contribute to poor eating habits and describe at least one strategy for overcoming each.
  • By the end of the health promotion exercise, the awareness of obesity in the community should increase by at least 50% from the post health promotion awareness and knowledge.

Conclusion

            Obesity is a health problem that affects healthcare centers by increasing health complications. The solution to this problem from the community level is by health promotion plan to reduce cases of obesity and its related health risks like stroke and cancer. The increased awareness of the negative effect of smoking would lead to behavioral change that would further reduce the number of people suffering from obesity in the community.
