Humanistic-Existential Psychotherapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

            CBT is founded on the hypothesis that people’s emotions and behaviors are shaped by their perceptions of events. It seeks to teach clients to be their therapists by enabling them to recognize their current thinking and behavior patterns and equipping them with the tools to modify their maladaptive cognitive and behavioral patterns (Fordham et al., 2021). In addition, CBT postulates that people with psychological distress can be trained in better coping approaches, which enable them to relieve the distress resulting in successful lives. Differences between Humanistic-Existential Psychotherapy and CBT

Major differences are evident in the concepts of humanistic-existential and CBT, as well as the therapy approach utilized in the two therapies. For instance, humanistic-existential psychotherapy is centered on the existential analysis of a normal day. This is because it is based on the assumption that life is purposeless unless an individual dedicates themself to give it meaning. Thus personal decisions and choices are vital in humanistic-existential psychotherapy (Heidenreich, 2021). It emphasizes the transcendence of an individual and the motivation to attain the subjective meaning of life. On the other hand, CBT emphasizes actual emotions, thoughts, somatic reactions, and behaviors. CBT examines how a person learned these experiences in the past and maintains them in the present, while humanistic-existential psychotherapy stresses the overlap to the future. For example, the CBT viewpoint on depression is that negative automatic thoughts, intrusive imagery, and interpretation bias, as well as a lack of positive thoughts and images, act independently and collaboratively to maintain the depressed mood (Heidenreich, 2021). Conversely, the humanistic-existential psychotherapy point of view on depression is that the loss of a sense of life and negative opinion of the future leads to depression.

Why Humanistic-Existential Psychotherapy Was Utilized With the Client

He now states that he is encountering challenges in understanding his position in life and he feels constricted. In this case, humanistic-existential psychotherapy was applied to help Joe to become self-aware and make his own choices. Since he is confused about his life position, humanistic-existential psychotherapy would help him establish his identity and be present for quality relationships (Krug, 2019). Therefore, humanistic-existential therapy was ideal for this client because it would enable him to seek out his life’s purpose, meaning, and beliefs and ultimately have a purposeful existence.

Conclusion

Humanistic-existential psychotherapy asserts that every person has the freedom and authority to rise above the purposelessness of their existence. It enables a person to develop self-awareness and personal identity. On the other hand, CBT centers on the human mind and asserts that it is not the situation a person is in that determines how they feel but how they interpret the situation. It is grounded on the hypothesis that unhealthy thinking patterns contribute to psychological distress.
