            Millions of patients with eye defects wear contact lenses across the globe. Approximately a third of individuals who wear contacts will experience a form of complication either infectious or non-infectious, that may require medical attention. Some of the noninfectious complications of contact lenses include dryness, mechanical corneal abrasions, toxic/immune reactions, tight lenses syndrome, limbal stem cell deficiency, endothelial complications, subconjunctival hemorrhage, and giant papillary conjunctivitis (Lim et al., 2018). Infectious complications on the other hand include infectious keratitis among others. Most of these complications can be managed well with limited risks of complications.

            However, most of the time, poorly fitting contacts or traumatic experience during the insertion or removal of the contact lenses usually leads to a painful scratch or scrape to the cornea, or corneal abrasion (Tanen & Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, 2018). This condition requires immediate medical attention for further assessment and administration of antibiotic therapy to reduce the risks of infection. Most patient with corneal abrasion usually attains full recovery after treatment, without permanent eye damage. However, deeper scratches of the cornea have been reported to increase risks of complications such as scarring of the cornea, corneal erosion, or corneal infection. If not managed appropriately, such complications can lead to long-term eye defects characterized by recurrent pain following healing. For those with corneal abrasion that has completely healed, with a fully restored corneal surface, wearing contact lenses again may be considered, but with increased risks of recurrent corneal erosion syndrome (RCE) (Kates & Tuli, 2021). Prior assessment by an ophthalmologist is thus needed to assess the risks of complications before a patient decides whether or not to wear contact lenses.
