Data Collection

Evidence-based practice (EBP) brings positive change in health practice by recommending practice changes to enhance patient outcomes. Through EBP projects, nurses gather data to compare different approaches and use findings to analyze the effectiveness of various interventions. Data can be gathered qualitatively or quantitatively depending on the project’s objectives, type, and scope.

My project assesses whether treating hypertension with the recommended medication within 60 minutes would be more effective than current standardized practices in improving maternal outcomes/preventing complications within six months. I would use a quantitative design to collect data and evaluate the effectiveness of the project. Quantitative design is primarily about collecting and analyzing numerical data to make predictions and generalize research results to broader populations (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2021). The same applies to this project. The primary goal is to collect and analyze data on the treatment approaches and generalize their effectiveness based on the findings.

Quantitative data collection tools vary depending on the project. The most effective tool for my project would be questionnaires. In data collection, questionnaires are highly effective when gathering data from a target audience. They also allow comparability; quantified data can be compared and contrasted with other research to measure differences (Houser, 2021) accurately. Generally, a quantitative design is the best for my project since comparing numbers would accurately measure the effectiveness of treating a hypertension crisis within sixty minutes. A larger sample can also be used in quantitative research besides enabling more generalization of results (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2021). The project also requires an objective.

Data is critical in research and evidence-based projects. Depending on a project’s scope and objectives, qualitative and quantitative designs can be used. Before selecting any method, EBP proponents and change agents should evaluate the intended objectives and other critical determinants such as generalization. The quantitative design would best fit my project since numbers’ comparison would allow more objective generalization.

Data collection
Explain whether you would select a qualitative or quantitative design to collect data and evaluate the effectiveness of your evidence-based practice project proposal. Identify which data collection tool you would specifically use and explain why this design is best for your evidence-based practice project proposal.
