NURS 6051 Discussion: Big Data Risks and Rewards

When you wake in the morning, you may reach for your cell phone to reply to a few text or email messages that you missed overnight. On your drive to work, you may stop to refuel your car. Upon your arrival, you might swipe a key card at the door to gain entrance to the facility. And before finally reaching your workstation, you may stop by the cafeteria to purchase a coffee.

From the moment you wake, you are in fact a data-generation machine. Each use of your phone, every transaction you make using a debit or credit card, even your entrance to your place of work, creates data. It begs the question: How much data do you generate each day? Many studies have been conducted on this, and the numbers are staggering: Estimates suggest that nearly 1 million bytes of data are generated every second for every person on earth.

As the volume of data increases, information professionals have looked for ways to use big data—large, complex sets of data that require specialized approaches to use effectively. Big data has the potential for significant rewards—and significant risks—to healthcare. In this Discussion, you will consider these risks and rewards.

  • Reflect on your own experience with complex health information access and management and consider potential challenges and risks you may have experienced or observed.

By Day 3 of Week 5

Post a description of at least one potential benefit of using big data as part of a clinical system and explain why. Then, describe at least one potential challenge or risk of using big data as part of a clinical system and explain why. Propose at least one strategy you have experienced, observed, or researched that may effectively mitigate the challenges or risks of using big data you described. Be specific and provide examples.

Respond to at least two of your colleagues* on two different days, by offering one or more additional mitigation strategies or further insight into your colleagues’ assessment of big data opportunities and risks.

Big Data Risks and Rewards

Access to information is vital in informing new developments and improving operations within organizations. When people have more access to information, they become better placed to organize themselves optimally to deliver the best outcomes. Access to data also enables the prediction of future events, particular parameters, and current trends. In the present world, technological advancements have become ubiquitous in all aspects of our lives, enabling limitless access to data and information about health, social aspects, science, work, and other aspects.

In the past decades, “Big Data” has received special interest owing to the profound potential lying within it. Pastorino et al. (2019) state that using big data can assist healthcare workers in containing costs and improve health outcomes in unprecedented ways. Big Data refers to massive access to limitless information that can work wonders (Batko & Ślęzak, 2022).

Big data’s potential in healthcare depends on the capability to identify patterns and turn high data volumes into actionable knowledge for decision-makers and precision medicine (Pastorino et al., 2019). In healthcare settings, sources of big data include patient medical records, devices that are a component of the Internet of Things, electronic health records, results of medical examinations, and hospital records (Dash et al., 2019). This paper analyzes the potential benefits of using big data, potential risks or challenges, and the strategies that can be used to mitigate the identified risks and challenges.

Benefits of Using Big Data

Using data analytic tools and appropriate software to determine themes and trends in big data can help generate actionable information. This information can provide value-based healthcare services, leverage the quality of services, improve safety, and reduce costs. Dash et al. (2019) assert that by utilizing analytics information from big data, stakeholders in the healthcare sector can make better financial and medical decisions, improving the safety and quality of health outcomes while reducing costs at the same time.

Other benefits of using big data include identifying disease causes, data-driven medical research, patient health monitoring, capturing disease trends, providing predictive analytics helpful in preventing diseases, and precision medicine to meet individualized patient needs (Batko & Ślęzak, 2022).

Additionally, big data support research and scientific activities increases profitability, predicts disease progression, improves the quality of healthcare services, and identifies trends that inform proposals for healthier lifestyles and practices (Dash et al., 2019). Lastly, Batko and Ślęzak (2022) assert that when patients use big data analytics, they can find the best medical facilities, evaluate the effectiveness of different treatments, and compare the quality and prices of various providers enabling patients to settle for the best ones.

Potential Challenges and Strategies to Mitigate Them

The use of big data poses several legal and ethical challenges due to the personal nature of the information shared. These challenges include the risk of compromising patient autonomy and privacy when big data analytics is done without the patients’ express permission (Pastorino et al., 2019). Data privacy can also be infringed when unauthorized persons have unlimited data access.

To mitigate this challenge, stakeholders should first acknowledge its potential and make proactive efforts to address it. Some of the strategies I have observed and experienced include using passwords in electronic health records, continuous education, and emphasis to oblige with the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The act provides laws that protect the disclosure of sensitive patient information without their knowledge or consent.

Conclusion

Overall, the benefits of using big data are of great essence in healthcare. However, its use is posed by some ethical and legal challenges. Healthcare providers should make deliberate actions to mitigate the potential risks and challenges associated with using big data to continually improve health outcomes’ safety, quality, and affordability.

NURS 6051 Discussion: Healthcare Information Technology Trends

Throughout history, technological advancements have appeared for one purpose before finding applications elsewhere that lead to spikes in its usage and development. The internet, for example, was originally developed to share research before becoming a staple of work and entertainment. But technology—new and repurposed—will undoubtedly continue to be a driver of healthcare information. Informaticists often stay tuned to trends to monitor what the next new technology will be or how the next new idea for applying existing technology can benefit outcomes.

In this Discussion, you will reflect on your healthcare organization’s use of technology and offer a technology trend you observe in your environment.

To Prepare:

  • Reflect on the Resources related to digital information tools and technologies.
  • Consider your healthcare organization’s use of healthcare technologies to manage and distribute information.
  • Reflect on current and potential future trends, such as use of social media and mobile applications/telehealth, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled asset tracking, or expert systems/artificial intelligence, and how they may impact nursing practice and healthcare delivery.

Post a brief description of general healthcare technology trends, particularly related to data/information you have observed in use in your healthcare organization or nursing practice. Describe any potential challenges or risks that may be inherent in the technologies associated with these trends you described. Assignment: Literature Review: The Use of Clinical Systems to Improve Outcomes and Efficiencies

New technology—and the application of existing technology—only appears in healthcare settings after careful and significant research. The stakes are high, and new clinical systems need to offer evidence of positive impact on outcomes or efficiencies.

Nurse informaticists and healthcare leaders formulate clinical system strategies. As these strategies are often based on technology trends, informaticists and others have then benefited from consulting existing research to inform their thinking.

In this Assignment, you will review existing research focused on the application of clinical systems. After reviewing, you will summarize your findings.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and reflect on the impact of clinical systems on outcomes and efficiencies within the context of nursing practice and healthcare delivery.
  • Conduct a search for recent (within the last 5 years) research focused on the application of clinical systems. The research should provide evidence to support the use of one type of clinical system to improve outcomes and/or efficiencies, such as “the use of personal health records or portals to support patients newly diagnosed with diabetes.”
  • Identify and select 4 peer-reviewed research articles from your research.
