Diverse Student or Patient Population

            Nurses work with patients from diverse backgrounds in their practice. The diversity implies that they have to provide care that addresses the needs, values, and preferences of these patients. Evidence-based strategies exist for use by nurses in addressing the challenges they experience in their practice (Balgan et al., 2022). Therefore, this essay examines my experience working with a diverse patient and evidence-based strategy to increase the success of interaction for nursing students.I have an experience with a diverse patient. It was a 20-year-old Hispanic male patient who had been diagnosed with appendicitis with abscess. The patient was on conservative management. I was tasked with the responsibility of explaining to him discharge instructions via telephone in Spanish. However, I got a feeling that the patient did not comprehend anything I shared with him via the phone. This was after he could not explain in his understanding the teaching or the care needed for his self-management of the disease.

Differentiated instruction is a teaching approach that focuses on ensuring that the instruction or teaching addresses all the needs of the audience such as patients or students. Therefore, instead of using one approach to teaching, different methods should be adopted to meet the diverse needs of the learners (Balgan et al., 2022; Levey, 2018). For instance, they can differentiate content, process, projects, and learning environment to ensure optimum understanding and outcomes.

Conclusion

            Diverse patients and students have different needs that should be met in the teaching process. Nurse educators and practitioners should adopt teaching strategies that align with the students’ needs. Differentiated instruction is an example of an effective strategy to achieve this outcome. It entails approaches such as differentiating process, methods, learning environment, and projects.

An experience working with a diverse patient involved where I had to discharge a Hispanic male who was managed conservatively for Appendicitis with abscess. He was 20 years. While explaining the discharge instructions via telephone (cryacom) in Spanish, I got the feeling that he was not comprehending everything. I then asked if someone was coming to pick him up and he said yes. I waited for that person to explain to both.
