Mental Health in the Community

According to the Healthy People 2020, mental health disorders affects all people of all ages, from early childhood through old age. Mental illness entails a wide range of mental health conditions that impact one’s mood, thinking and behaviors (ODPHP, 2022). These include depression, anxiety disorders and addictive behaviors among others. Depression among adolescents is a mental health issue that affects different aspects of their behaviors, thinking, and moods. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2022) observes that depression is among the most prevalent and diagnosed mental disorders among children and adolescents. CDC asserts that close to 4.5% of adolescents and children suffer from depression. Again, adolescents with depression are more likely to have another common mental disorder. For instance, three in every four adolescents and children with depression had anxiety while one in every two had a behavioral problem. The implication is that depression is a serious mental health issue that impacts adolescents across all sociocultural and economic spectra in the country. Depression remains a critical concern along with substance use and suicide among adolescents. The study shows that 15% of adolescents suffer from major depressive episodes.

Mental Health America asserts that over 2.5 million young people in the country have severe depression with youth from multicultural backgrounds suffering the greatest risk. The organization also advances that substance use is a critical contributory factor to depression among adolescents. In his study, Daly (2021) observes that major depression is among the leading causes of disability. Further, it represents a significant concern for adolescents in the country. The study observes that the increased rates of depression among adolescents implores policymakers and public health players to direct their prevention and intervention efforts on this group because of its vulnerabilities.

Adolescents find it difficult to deal with depression because of several factors within the system and at home. Many ignore depression symptoms while others are hesitant to seek treatment when they discover that they have mental disorder. Depression impacts adolescents in their efforts to be part of the community as they have impaired functioning and cannot effectively contribute to their overall future development. Depression is a contributing factor to increased rates of suicide and substance use disorder evident in this population. The implication is that while the adolescents attempt to be part of the community, they continue to deal with mental health issues like depression that make them susceptible and vulnerable to substance use disorder and eventually addictive behaviors leading to comorbidities.

In their systematic review of literature, Fong and Ichinose (2020) assert that nurses are critical in offering interventions to help adolescents deal with depression as a critical health issue. The study notes that detection is an important intervention that nurses can use to help adolescents deal with the issue. Identification of the need for mental health care using routine screening and assessment of a patient in a holistic manner improves the detection of the condition among this population. The article observes that nurses must ensure that as primary care providers in different settings, they conduct comprehensive assessment to recognize signs and symptoms of depression. The primary care nurse in collaboration with the affected individual and their families make efforts to improve access to mental health services by referring the case to experts for better diagnosis and treatment plans and care. Nurses also have a duty to offer education and awareness to adolescents who access their facilities or practice settings with such conditions. Therefore, nurses play a crucial role in helping adolescents dealing with depression as a mental disorder in their communities.
