Summary

Gestational diabetes is a problem during pregnancy characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. The condition resolves after birth and can occur in people without a history of diabetes. In gestational diabetes, the body fails to produce adequate insulin to meet the extra pregnancy demands. The risk factors of gestational diabetes include a BMI of over 30, previous gestational diabetes, a history of diabetes in the family, and a previous baby weighing more than 4.5 kgs. The condition is severe and can put the baby and mother at risk if not properly managed (Seshiah et al., 2020). The clinical manifestations of gestational diabetes include tiredness, increased thirst, high frequency of urination, dry mouth, and the diagnostic feature of high blood sugar level (McIntyre & Moses, 2020).

The laboratory tests and screening for diabetes require an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), taken by drinking a glucose drink, particularly in the morning, and another test after 2 hours to observe the body’s response to glucose. The oral glucose test checks whether the patient’s glucose level is beyond the recommended range for a pregnant woman. For instance, a glucose level beyond 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) is positive for gestational diabetes (Tsakiridis et al., 2021). I would also recommend a routine glucose tolerant test for a patient to determine gestational diabetes. The glucose tolerance tests are done every three hours, and the rationale for the tests is to determine whether the high blood sugar level in the patient is due to gestational glucose. Regarding the scan, an ultrasound imaging test will be necessary. Ultrasound is recommended to examine the baby for abnormalities (McIntyre & Moses, 2020). Other tests that may be recommended for the patient include random blood sugar test, fasting blood sugar test, and A1C test. I would also create a plan to test high blood pressure since elevated blood pressure is common in patients with gestational diabetes.
