My DNP project focuses on an educational intervention to equip home health nurses with the necessary knowledge and skills to improve wound care outcomes. Benner’s theory describes five stages of clinical competence. The first stage is novices, beginners with no experience and rely heavily on rules and guidelines. The second stage is advanced beginners, which entails nurses with some experience who can recognize recurring meaningful components. The third stage is competent, which refers to nurses working for 2-3 years, demonstrating efficiency, coordination, and confidence. The fourth stage is proficient and describes nurses who perceive situations as a while and know what to expect in the various situations, and the fifth stage is expert, which describes nurses with an intuitive grasp of each situation (Landers et al., 2020).2

The DNP project will use the theory to help develop a relevant education curriculum and curate the assessments to meet the current and desired competency levels. The theory will inform staff knowledge assessment at baseline to determine their needs, which will be the basis for the new curriculum. Wright and Matthews (2022) note that Benner’s theory can help learn curriculums and assessments to promote progressive skills and knowledge development among nurses.

The theory will also help develop baseline assessments. The knowledge tests developed will be based on the expected level of competence among the home health nurses. For example, the knowledge test will not focus on advanced knowledge of patient wounds and causes, and hence, testing in such an area may not be necessary. However, knowledge of the formation of some wounds, such as pressure ulcers and secondary wounds, will be necessary to enhance their knowledge in their prevention, hence the need for testing in such areas. Thus, Benner’s Novice to Expert theory will be instrumental in implementing my DNP project.
