Discussion: N 6003 Module 6 Sample
The increasing role of nurses in healthcare delivery due to a host of factors like a rise in demand for care and reforms leading to improved access to healthcare means that healthcare providers specialize in certain areas for effective care. For instance, the need for mental health care continues to increase as more and more individuals battle mental health disorders like depression, dementia due to aging, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among other conditions like bipolar (Cherry et al., 2019). As such, my selected specialty for advanced nursing education is psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP). Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners are advanced practice nurses who practices as a psychiatrist and performs diagnostic assessments, evaluates health conditions, and manages psychiatric disorders among patients and health populations.

Choosing this specialty was not easy given the mental health situation among the population, especially dealing with individuals battling mental illness and are not aware. Again, advanced nursing requires more dedication in terms of the time and creating a balance between work, family and personal aspects, and education, especially in a fast-paced and ever-transforming healthcare environment and system. Imperatively, I had difficulties on settling for this specialty due to several options that I had and considering the balance between work and going to school. Dealing with an array of patients, from those with suicidal ideas like adolescents to those with chronic mental conditions means that one must be adequately prepared (Finley, 2020). The factors that drove me to this specialty include offering services to several patients, especially the racial minorities and those with limited resources as primary care provider, and fulfilling my professional development and career. Having a MSN degree with specialization in mental health will give a competitive advantage and edge over my peers.
Professional organizations support nursing practice, promotes professional conduct and articulate issues facing nurses while advancing practice values and promoting healthcare access. Being an active member of a professional nursing organization is a core aspect of nurses’ professional development (Laureate Education, 2018). Through associations offer networking opportunities, access to education resources, and a platform to interact and share ideas with other nurses. The American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) is a professional organization associated with the mental health nurse practitioners. The association supports PMHNPs through advocacy for the specialty, providing resource access, and research as well as connection among different peers and other specialties (APNA, 2023). A nurse can become a member of this association by completing the application form and paying the required registration amount.
