Topic 4 DQ2
A medical-surgical unit and an inpatient rehabilitative unit are components of any hospital setting. A medical-surgical unit is a section in a hospital where medical and surgical care are offered to those in need. Patients with acute medical conditions are admitted to the medical unit for further management and stabilization. Some of the conditions treated in the medical unit include pneumonia, anemia, meningitis, and heart problems such as hypertension among others. A surgical unit admits patients requiring surgical interventions such as surgeries (Linton & Matteson, 2022). Some of the conditions common in a surgical unit include those requiring thyroidectomy, cranial surgeries, and appendectomy among others.
An inpatient rehabilitative unit is a department in the hospital where patients receive their required rehabilitation care. Patients who have undergone procedures such as surgery or suffered chronic conditions that have affected physical functioning are admitted to the inpatient rehabilitation unit. Patients admitted to the unit receive care that aims at improving functioning and quality of care. Some of the services that patients receive in such a setting include speech therapy and occupational and physical therapy. Unlike medical-surgical units where the focus is on patient stabilization, the aim of admitting patients to the inpatient rehabilitative unit is to maximize independence and functioning. Inpatient rehabilitation also provides a safe avenue for discharging patients to the community or other levels of care (Nazon et al., 2023; Olezene et al., 2021). Despite the differences, both units ensure the promotion of optimum patient outcomes for patients and their families.
