Alendronate is a drug used to manage osteoporosis, a condition characterized by low bone density. The drug inhibits osteoclast activities and so prevents bone resorptionand so regulates bone turnover. Alendronate is categorized as second-generation bisphosphonate that helps in improving bone density (Isales, 2019). The medication is indicated for managing osteoporosis in men and post-menopausal women, but not for children. The side effects of the medication include hypokalaemia, gastrointestinal irritations, nausea, and musculoskeletal pain. Patients on the medications should be monitored closely for possible electrolyte imbalance considering that it induces hypokalaemia.

Patients with osteoporosis are prone to fractures because of their low bone density. The study by Isales (2019) indicates that patients with fractures receiving alendronic acid experience better treatment outcomes. Therefore, there is enough evidence that the drug helps in bone re-modeling that eventually promotes absorption and healing. The density of the bone depends on the calcification. The osteoclast break done the calcium in the bones and thus reducing their weight and making them fragile (Isales, 2019). Alendronic acid reduces such events and facilitates homeostasis in the mode formation. The study also offers sufficient evidence on the use of alendronic acid in preventing subsequent bone fractures in patients.

Ethnic and cultural factors affect patients’ medication adherence and treatment outcomes. Some beliefs do not support pharmacotherapy interventions and so patients must be educated on why they are being given the treatment. Genetically, osteoporosis could be idiopathic and this means that the patient may not experience better outcomes because of the mutations in their androgen and estrogen receptors. In such cases, better outcomes can only be achieved when the genetic defects are addressed.

Select a medication using the treatment guidelines for osteoporosis, thyroid disorder, or diabetes mellitus. Share the mechanism of action of this medication and hints for monitoring, side effects, and drug interactions, including interactions with CAM. Discuss evidence and treatment guidelines to determine appropriate therapeutic options for a patient with osteoporosis, thyroid disorder, or diabetes mellitus. Discuss ethnic, cultural, and genetic considerations that must be considered for treatment. In addition, share a clinical trial that supports the use of this agent. Include the name of the medication in the subject line so that the medications can be followed.
