In addition, the commission supports healthcare institutions in improving and eliminating inequalities in healthcare and the delivery of care. The joint commission has developed National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) based on the priority patient safety issues and how to address them. This discussion identifies the NPSGs and explains why they should be incorporated into nursing practice, the benefits and challenges of implementing the goals in a healthcare organization, and how applying the NPSG’s performance elements reduce negative patient outcomes.

The selected NPSGs are goal 1 – NPSG 01.01.01, improve the accuracy of patient identification by using at least two patient identifiers when providing care, treatment and service, and goal 3 – NPSG 03.04.02, improve the safety of using medications by labeling all medications, medication containers, and other solutions on and off the sterile field in perioperative and other procedural settings. Goal 1, improving the accuracy of patient identification, is vital in nursing practice since it helps prevent issues related to wrong patient errors, such as incorrect diagnosis, wrong surgeries, and adverse drug reactions. It is also vital to apply medication safety in nursing practice since it prevents medication errors and related patient safety risks. Therefore, applying these two goals in nursing practice helps prevent related errors and patient safety risks.

Implementing the selected NPSGs benefits the organization in several ways. The organization can maintain high levels of patient safety, which translates to optimum care quality by preventing patient misidentification and medication errors. Chapius et al. (2019) note that minimal patient safety issues related to misidentification and medication errors give an organization a good reputation. Thus, implementing the goals benefits the organization by promoting a good reputation. The organization also benefits from good performance, measured by the quality of care and patient safety issues.

However, there may be challenges in implementing these NPSGs in an organization. One of the challenges is finding a patient information system that matches patient data correctly. According to Riplinger et al. (2020), finding a system that matches patient details 100% is difficult, thus a major challenge in maintaining patient identification goals. Another challenge is miscommunication among the interdisciplinary team, which may compromise medication management. Therefore, effective communication is essential in improving the safety of using medications.

Appropriate application of the elements in the NPSG reduces adverse patient outcomes. The elements of goal 1-improving the accuracy of patient identification, including using at least two patient identifiers and using distinct identification methods for newborn patients. Application of these elements reduces negative patient outcomes by preventing near-misses related to patient misidentification. Ueda and Morishita (2023) note that using more than one patient identifier improves identification accuracy, thus promoting positive patient outcomes. In addition, healthcare organizations can reduce the negative patient outcomes related to poor medication management, such as adverse drug reactions, by applying the medication labeling element from goal 3.

The joint commission supports healthcare organizations by identifying current patient safety issues and developing solutions to address the issues. Applying these goals is vital in nursing practice since it enhances nurses’ performance and helps prevent patient safety issues. As discussed above, implementing the NPSGs in an organization has various benefits and challenges. Appropriate application of the elements of NPSGs reduces adverse patient outcomes.
