Discussion: Translational Research

Ecological and global issues, social determinants of health and principles of genetics and genomics impact the use of translational research. These aspects are essential in addressing the burden of global diseases as they produce meaningful discoveries which are translated into practice to enhance healthcare provision and care outcomes, especially in addressing global disease pandemics like the development of COVID-19 vaccines (Edgeworth et al., 2020). Ecological issues like the discovery of the COVID-19 disease in a wet market in Wuhan China, global need to control the spread of the disease and social determinants of health based on available communal resources have been instrumental in containing the spread of the condition.

The use of genetics and genomics principles has been evident in the discovery of different strains or variants of the COVID-19 disease like the delta and omicron variants with subsequent changes to containment measures in different jurisdictions. The sequencing of the variants and efforts to develop jabs that are appropriate for each variant is a demonstration that translational research is a critical component of effective process to deal with pandemics. Translational research has been timely, instrumental and efficient in efforts across the world to develop a COVID-19 vaccine that could mitigate the severity of the disease, especially among those most susceptible and at increased risk of death from exposure to the condition (Milane & Amiji, 2021). Many people are making efforts to get a COVID-19 jab since vaccines are now available and accessible with governments recommending booster shots for those at increased risk and exposure to the condition. The development of vaccines is a successful product of deploying translational research (Molster et al., 2018). These types of studies have direct benefits for human population and reduce the burden of global diseases like COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS and even malaria.
