DNP 810A Reflective Journal Assignment

DNP 810A Reflective Journal Assignment

A reflection comes at the end of a course, where a student gets a chance to self-reflect on the achievements made in the course and potential challenges witnessed during the course. As such, the current reflection essay purposes of presenting learnings and experiences achieved during the Grand Canyon University’s DNP 810A: The emerging areas of human health. The challenges and achievements related to fulfilling the course objectives and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials of DNP will be explored (Ahmed et al., 2018). The importance of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials of DNP emanates from the fact that DNP students are required to meet the essentials to be considered competent.

The Reflection

The major focus of undertaking the DNP 810A was to achieve the formulated course objectives. Therefore, course activities and learning experiences were important for completing direct practice improvements and course objectives. Learning aspects, strategies, and approaches were employed to help to meet the AACN essentials and the course objectives. For example, discussion questions related to weekly course topics were undertaken. These discussions were all revolving around emerging areas of human health hence key to completing the course objectives. In addition, weekly assignments were done throughout the course to help explore more and develop a deeper understanding of the emerging areas of human health hence achieving the AACN essentials.

The DNP-810A course was particularly important in driving the DNP candidate towards acquiring the needed knowledge key in patient diagnosis and practice management through making appropriate and relevant decisions. The DNP candidate was also able to participate in research and literature search to study current trends in strategies for improving human health, acquisition of skills used in coaching communities, patients, and their families on the importance of health and why it is important to approach human health from a holistic perspective. Therefore, the following specific essentials were achieved during DNP 810-A.

Essential III: Clinical Scholarship and Analytical Methods for Evidence-Based Practice

DNP essential number III is one of the essentials that was directly achieved by undertaking DNP 810A. As part of the course, the DNP candidate explored genetics and how it relates to chronic conditions. Therefore, such a study ensured that the student explored evidence-based practice and analyzed the presented evidence through analytical methods on the current trends used in managing and treating such genetic disorders. In addition, other aspects were also explored, including disease prevalence and incidence and why family members should be included in such care efforts and strategies. These were all achieved by exploring a case study which was studied throughout the weeks of the study (Al-Alawi et al., 2019). In efforts to find out the best management and treatment strategies, a literature review was accomplished in search of the best evidence, hence contributing to the development of analytical skills. Genetic disorders’ clinical aspects were also studied in this course which was again important in the development of clinical scholarship.

Essential V: Health Care Policy for Advocacy in Health Care

The next essential that was accomplished through DNP 810 is essential number IV, health care policy for advocacy in health care. As in the case of the essential discussed earlier, assignments and discussions were completed dealing with the health care policy related to the various current healthcare issues like genetics. As part of the course, a case study involving genetics was explored and the impacts that genetics have on policy and policy formulation. The implication is that the DNP candidate was able to study more policy hence acquiring valuable skills and knowledge related to healthcare policy and advocacy (Phillips et al., 2018). Even though there is always a need to improve patient care and ensure that patients have better outcomes, several factors influence such outcomes. For example, health care policy has been known to impact the quality of patient care services offered to the patient. As such, it was key that the DNP students participate in activities and course aspects that improve skills related to healthcare policy and advocacy.

Essential VII: Clinical Prevention and Population Health for Improving the Nation’s Health

The next DNP essential met in the DNP 810A course is essential number seven which focuses on the clinical prevention and population health for improving the health of a nation. In some of the weeks’ assignments, illnesses connected to genetic disorders and diagnostic strategies that can be used for the conditions were explored. Therefore, the student was able to acquire skills in clinical prevention. Class discussions were also key in the achievement of the essential; for example, evaluation of the impact of treatment options chosen, selecting treatments, diagnosis, patient screening, counseling, and nutritional assessments were all undertaken (Ahmed et al., 2018). The discussions covered several aspects of clinical prevention and population health hence helping the DNP leaner to meet the requirement of the DNP essential number seven.

Conclusion

This reflection essay has focused on various achievements accomplished by the DNP candidate by completing the Grand Canyon University’s DNP 810 A course. The achievements are related to the course objectives and the DNP essentials. The class assignments and discussion questions undertaken throughout the course were all key in achieving the course objectives and the DNP essentials. In particular, DNP essentials number III, V, and VII were all achieved by completing the course.

Assessment Description
The Individual Success Plan (ISP) assignment in this course requires your collaboration with the course faculty early on to establish a plan for successful completion of mutually identified and agreed-upon specific deliverables for your programmatic requirements. Programmatic requirements are: (1) completion of required practice immersion hours, (2) completion of work associated with program competencies, and (3) work associated with completion of your Direct Practice Improvement (DPI) Project.

A preconference meeting is intended for the learner and preceptor/mentor to review course- and learner-specific learning objectives: the roles, responsibilities, and expectations of the learner and preceptor/mentor during this practice immersion experience. All faculty and preceptor/mentor information will be given to each party by the learner. Any course or program information requested by the preceptor/mentor will be provided by the learner. During this meeting, the learner and preceptor/mentor will discuss the course and practice immersion goals, including any projects that are to take place. The faculty will review the submitted document and must approve proposed projects at this time. The faculty will also send an introductory email to the preceptor/mentor.

General Requirements:

Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment as it pertains to deliverables due in this course.

Locate and download Individual Success Plan (ISP) and Direct Practice Improvement (DPI) timeline documents in the DNP PI Workspace.
Review the DNP Program Milestones document in the DNP PI Workspace and identify which domains, competencies, and milestones apply to this course. Note: Not all courses have milestones.
Determine what practice immersion experiences you plan to seek in order to address each competency. Include how many hours you plan to set aside to meet your goals. Learners will apply concepts from each of their core courses to reflect upon, critically examine, and improve current practice and are required to integrate scholarly readings to develop case reports that demonstrate increasingly complex and proficient practice.
Use the ISP to develop a personal plan for completing your practice immersion hours and how competencies will be met. Show all of the major milestones and deliverables in the timeline.
Within the ISP, ensure you identify specific deliverables which can include the following: individualized DNP practice immersion contracts; comprehensive log of practice immersion hours applied to doctoral-level learning outcomes; learner evaluations; preceptor/mentor evaluations; current and updated CV; scholarly activities; GCU DNP competency self-assessment; reflective journal; course goals and plan for how competencies and practice immersion hours will be met; faculty and preceptor/mentor approvals of course goals and documented practice immersion hours; and DPI Project milestones.
While an ISP is required, unless you have a mentor, a mentor signature is not required for this course. A preconference and a postconference/evaluation between learners and preceptors/mentors are mandatory for all learners enrolled in all DNP courses (from DNP-815A on). Conferences may be conducted face-to-face or via technology. A copy of the wet-ink or digitally (digital identifier) signed document must be uploaded into the classroom no later than the end of Topic 1.
Overall course- and learner-specific objectives: These objectives should be discussed during each conference, as learners are responsible for completing all experiences as mandated for the program.
Learners will submit this assignment using the assignment dropbox in the LMS. In addition, learners must upload this deliverable to the Learner Dissertation Page (LDP) in the DNP PI Workspace for later use.
Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. The APA Style Guide is located in the Student Success Center.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to the beginning to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
You are not required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite.

Assessment Description
As of 2017, health care expenditures in the United States are near 17.9% of our gross domestic product (GDP), with a major portion of Medicare funding going toward chronic illness and care at the last 6 months of life. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) has made some initial legislative changes in the U.S. health system, but not sufficient enough to address growing expenditures and caring for the large aging population. In this assignment, learners will synthesize issues in aging with health policy solutions by writing a paper on one health issue for older individuals addressed in the topic and offering a policy solution. Example of issue: In 2014, more than 50% of the costs of institutional long-term care for older persons was paid for with public funds from Medicaid.

Parts 1-3:

Do not simply copy/paste entire case reports from Parts 1-3. Create a document including only the following areas from previous case reports:

Describe the disease, its prevalence, its incidence, and general knowledge of the disease.
Discuss the laboratory testing that can be done.
Describe if chromosomal analysis is/was indicated and detail the chromosomal change that caused the disease if it is a chromosomal disorder.
Describe the disorder in terms of its origin as either a single gene inheritance or a complex inheritance and considerations for practice and patient education.
Describe the gene mutation of the disease, as well as whether it is acquired or inherited, and how the mutation occurs.
Examine how genetics can influence policy issues.
Discuss any nutritional influences for this disease.
Process of nutritional assessment and counseling as it relates to health, prevention, screening, diagnostics, prognostics, selection of treatment, and monitoring of treatment effectiveness.
Part 4:

In addition, this cumulative case study must include the following:

Discuss any ethical considerations for this disease.
Compare how genetics can improve care and health outcomes while reducing cost to usual practices.
Discuss the changes in approaches to care when new evidence warrants evaluation of other options for improving outcomes or decreasing adverse events.
Create a plan for how you might educate colleagues or patients on this genetic disorder.

A postconference evaluation is mandatory and will occur at the end of this course and every subsequent course using the ISP form. This is intended for the learner and preceptor/mentor to review and evaluate the completion of the ISP. The faculty will validate that all areas are at “Meets Expectations” on the preceptor/mentor evaluation form, located in Typhon or Lopes Activity Tracker, prior to progression. The learner will upload the ISP and preceptor/mentor evaluations and proof of entered and approved practice immersion hours into the classroom by Topic 8 with the other required deliverables. Faculty will review this before filling out the faculty evaluation of the learner in Typhon or Lopes Activity Tracker, which the learner will also upload in Topic 8. The course faculty will complete a separate evaluation of the learner’s performance in the classroom. The faculty is responsible for any course grading, final course grade, and validation of the learner’s’ completed practice immersion hours.

General Requirements:

Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment as it pertains to deliverables due in this course.

Use the Individual Success Plan (ISP) developed in Topic 1 as a personal plan for completing your practice immersion hours and how competencies will be met. All of the major milestones and deliverables should be indicated in the timeline.
A copy of the wet-ink or digitally (digital identifier) signed document must be uploaded into the classroom no later than the end of Topic 8.
Directions:

Identify the specific deliverables you will complete throughout this course from those defined above with your faculty. Update your faculty/chair with any revisions or changes to the ISP.
List the challenges you expect to encounter as you continue the practice immersion hour and competency requirements throughout this course. How might you overcome these challenges?
Complete the Contact Information table at the beginning of the ISP resource, and type in your signature (learner only) and the date on which you completed the table. Read the information in the ISP document, including the following: Learner Expectations, Derivation of the ISP, and Instructions for Completing the ISP.
Follow the instructions and complete the ISP.
