Nurses, including advanced nurse practitioners like nurse educators, articulate their views and opinions in nursing practice and education based on their worldviews. Personal worldviews help nurses formulate their nursing philosophy of practice and enhance their influence on patients, nursing students, and the entire healthcare sector (Dupin et al., 2022). The purpose of this paper is to describe my worldview based on aspects like religion, spirituality, and culture. In its final part, the paper considers the effects of my worldview and nursing theory in developing my future practice.

Description of my Worldview

Worldviews entail fundamental beliefs concerning life, the orientation of one’s heart, and perspective on issues that express the underlying set of presuppositions or assumptions that may be true, partially true, or false, that individuals hold consciously or subconsciously about reality (Rush et al., 2023). Therefore, a worldview is a holistic view of reality and one’s interaction with it. A person’s worldview is not static but changes since they get new experiences, perspectives, and new knowledge for a better understanding of circumstances. According to Inayat et al. (2023), nurses employ various worldviews that may lead to ontological and epistemological conflicts. For instance, they appreciate the diversity of worldviews and recognize the significance of implicit perspectives to generate practical nursing knowledge in practice and nursing education. As such, worldviews are essential aspects of nursing as they help nurses formulate patient care interventions for better outcomes and quality care delivery.

My worldview emanates from various aspects; religion, spirituality, knowledge, and my professional practice as a faculty nurse. Humanistic and holistic principles, reverence to a Supreme Being or maker, and diversity of values, cultures, and perspectives influence my worldview. As a nurse, service to humanity in a humble, genuine, and respectful way is essential to enhance better outcomes. I believe in values like autonomy, empathy, beneficence, integrity, respect, and honesty as core aspects of nursing practice and profession. For instance, all people are equal and created in God’s image implying that they deserve dignity and respect in their treatment.

Personal Worldview

My practice and patient care philosophy is founded on respect and dignity of individuals and embracing diversity. Through these values, nurses in all specialties can serve humanity and protect their inherent dignity. Therefore, I believe that healthcare provision and education should be individual-centered, holistic, culturally competent, and focused on meeting the community healthcare needs. For instance, individual or patient-centered care means that every person is unique and should be treated as an individual and not just a set of characteristics, symptoms, and diagnoses. Holistic means that while health does not imply the absence of disease, interventions should focus on a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being of patients. Nurse educators should focus on the complete development and preparation of nursing students to deliver quality care and interact with patients from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds (Butts et al., 2021). Again, as a nurse practitioner, culturally competent care is a core part of modern nursing and implores healthcare providers to respect and accommodate diverse values expressed by students and even patients.

Specific Nursing Theory with the Personal Philosophy of Practice and Approach to Patient Care

The theory that aligns with my nursing practice philosophy is Jean Watson’s human caring model. Watson contends that caring regenerates life energies and potentiates individuals’ capabilities. According to Watson, caring is a science and more holistic than imagined implying that nurses should embrace positive energy that flows due to the integration of the mind, body, and soul which offer rewards to both patients and nursing students, nurses, and nurse educators (Butts et al., 2022). Watson says that caring occurs when nurses or care providers connect with and embrace the spirit of the other through authentic, full attention in the here and now, and show concern for their intrinsic life and personal meaning of another (Watson et al., 2022). Through caring, nurses display kindness and concern for patients while focusing on the attainment of the best outcomes.

As posited by Spronk et al. (2021), care professionals like nurses must always consider the best interests of their clients. Nurse educators prepare tomorrow’s nurses and should demonstrate a genuine interest in their activities. In their paper, Ghanbari-Afra et al. (2022) observe that human caring involves science, art, and humanity. Humanity is the heart of care and interactions among nurses and patients. For instance, caring implores nurses to establish therapeutic communication and show empathy while respecting patients’ rights and ethics of care. Human caring helps patients to achieve well-being and have positive experiences.

The human caring theory by Watson shares some similarities with my nursing philosophy. For instance, like the theory, my care philosophy emphasizes the significance of respect and dignity for patients, a holistic approach to care, and encouraging and embracing patient-centered holistic care. The theory also reinforces my belief in ethical values that guide nursing decisions such as empathy and compassion in nursing practice and education (Watson et al., 2022). Furthermore, like the theory, my nursing philosophy explores the importance of cultural diversity and treating each patient, nursing student, and person as unique due to their backgrounds and by being created in God’s image. Therefore, Watson’s theory emphasizes that society should maintain the ideas of human care; especially in efforts to reduce and prevent harm due to a proliferation of treatments and radical healing techniques which may disregard the human aspects that comprise authentic care.

Specific Example of Past or Current Practice Problem

As a nurse educator, one meets and instructs nursing students from various diverse backgrounds. These may include ethnic minorities to students with unique perspectives and worldviews. These diverse aspects are essential and form the basis of how unique and different people are in nursing education and other areas of the nursing profession, including nursing care settings and practice (Dupin et al., 2022). As such, my worldview and the selected nursing theory ensure that I embrace and accept diverse student views, cultural practices, and orientations, and be empathetic to them when they have issues. I treat each student as unique and require distinct approaches and learning strategies to attain the best in the class and practice as a future care provider. By treating these students with all positive values and perspectives, I inculcate self-esteem and empower them to make bold decisions in their practice and career progression.

Watson’s human caring theory emphasizes the holistic nature of human beings, irrespective of their background. Therefore, as a nurse educator, I focus on developing a holistic individual who understands their environment and is willing to make it better. The caring theory addresses my challenge of handling students from diverse environments and settings by emphasizing the unique or distinct nature of each person in their own right (Curlin & Tollefsen, 2021). By integrating Watson’s caring theory into nursing education, nurse educators create a more nurturing and supportive environment for nursing students to offer better care in practice.

How Worldview and Nursing will assist in Further Developing Future Practice

My future practice entails getting the highest level of education and transitioning to care provision as a nurse executive in a leadership position in a healthcare organization. Through the transition and continued practice as a nurse educator, I will leverage my worldview and nursing theory to improve care delivery and patient outcomes (Hughes et al., 2020). My practice and nursing education endeavors will also focus on the beneficiaries like students and patients to deliver better care. These two aspects will help me develop strong interpersonal interactions and therapeutic relationships with all stakeholders and understand their unique needs, values while offering care and education that promotes wellbeing and professional development, and career progression.

Conclusion

Nurses require worldviews and practice philosophies that influence their practice. Various factors influence my worldview leading to the development of my nursing care philosophy. These include cultural practices, spiritual beliefs, and personal values. My worldview aligns with Watson’s human caring theory and these guide my practice now and in the future as they enable me to solve issues and focus on career progression as well as professional development. The alignment is essential to developing faculty content and preparing nursing students to better their approaches to patient care and promote their well-being.
