Step 1: Learn about the Toxics Release Inventory Program.

Go to the EPA website of the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Program:

• What are TRI toxic chemicals?
• Why was the TRI Program created?

Step 2: Collect the data and information for the United States.

• On the same page select “TRI National Analysis” (https://www.epa.gov/trinationalanalysis) from the list on the left side of the screen.
• Scroll down to “2019 TRI National Analysis.”
• Select “Browse the TRI National Analysis.”

You can use the “NEXT” button at the bottom of the page to move through the report to find the answers to the following questions. You will compare your findings with the data for the state (or zip code) you select in Part 3 of the project.

• How many pounds of TRI-listed chemicals as production-related waste do facilities report managing in the United States during 2019?

However, please note that if zip code area does not have pollution producing facilities, the results for this zip code will be 0 lbs. In this case please choose another zip code or simply choose the state and do not choose a zip code.
