Writing entails carrying out research and generating information from past studies by different authors and sources. The information from such sources demonstrates credibility of a writer as an ethical person who acknowledges the intellectual property of others. It also shows that one has completed their effective analysis through the support of available and scholarly information for their audiences (Howard & Englesbe, 2022). Citing sources allows readers to track down the information’s origin and through accurate citations using footnotes, reference list or a bibliography.

Citing sources helps one to become a good writer in different ways. Careful citation practices build my credibility as a scholar and establishes my credibility among peers. Effective and better documentation of research and arguments enhances one’s credibility to the scientific colleagues and community. Additionally, good citation practices improve one’s skills as a better writer (Lysiak, 2020). Citing certain sources for different facts that we present removes the hallmark of intellectual laziness, vagueness in thinking, and sloppy writing through generalizations, clichés, and even outright false claims. The implication is that through citing sources one develops as a credible and well-versed writer who does not make false claims and uses vague statements in their works.

Citing helps one as a writer in future research studies and other researchers to easily locate sources that they can use to keep track of their different arguments and positions. While accurate citations can take effort to produce, they save one’s time in the future as they get more information about the topic under consideration. The implication is that citing sources is a cardinal rule for any accomplished and better writer to attain credibility and professionalism (Pérez-Neri et al., 2022). Citations are essential for writers to avoid plagiarism and maintain their academic integrity in their scholarly and scientific work.
