Healthcare providers should assess institutional and professional needs and recommend FDA-approved evidence-based technology to enhance care quality and safety and minimize healthcare costs. The topic I chose for this assessment is remote patient monitoring devices. Remote patient monitoring is an umbrella term that refers to technologies that continuously collect and send data from the patient to the healthcare provider regardless of the physical distance. These devices include vital sign monitors (blood pressure and glucose monitors) and movement detectors. The reason for selecting the topic is the growing need to increase patient monitoring in and outside the facility. In addition, there is a need to ensure patients are continually monitored at home, which may prove difficult to achieve without the devices (Malasinghe et al., 2019). I utilized Boolean logic and keywords to obtain relevant articles from reputable databases such as CINAHL plus, Cochrane database (Wiley Library), EBSCO, PubMed/Medline, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (Wiley). Some of the keywords used were “remote patient monitoring,” “continuous patient monitoring,” “patient monitoring and safety,” patient monitoring technology, and “patient safety.” The following annotated bibliography analyzes research on remote patient monitoring devices and develops recommendations for their implementation in healthcare institutions.

(2022) evaluated the effectiveness of a remote patient monitoring device (pulse oximetry) in promoting better patient care. The research is of significance because it is more specific to monitoring devices. It identifies and tests a monitoring device for safety and effectiveness. Aboksmaty et al. (2022) evaluated the device’s ability to effectively detect the risk of deterioration and the need for advanced care for further action. One of the major presentations in covid-19 patients is respiratory changes, majorly hypoxia due to respiratory failure. A pulse oximeter measures oxygen saturation in the blood and notifies the patient and healthcare provider of the respiratory distress and need for action. The researchers carried out a systematic review and conducted a thematic analysis. Their search identified the significance of pulse oximetry in RPM, but limited evidence of their safety or efficacy compared to other studies. Tylor et al. (2021) conducted a systematic review to determine if remote patient monitoring reduces acute care use. The objectives of remote patient monitoring are to promote patient access to consultation services and early access to advanced care services, reduce health complications, and reduce clinical visits and the burden in clinician offices. This research is of great significance because it tests the effectiveness/ significance of remote patient monitoring in acute care use. Acute care use, also called emergency care, is broad to accommodate all conditions requiring urgent attention. Tylor et al. (2021) evaluated 91 studies, and RPM for all diseases was identified to reduce acute care admissions, length of stay, and emergency care symptoms in about 49% of the cases. Most other studies reported no change, with few reporting an increase in acute care use.

On analyzing the various conditions, non-invasive monitoring achieved the greatest success in COPD, while invasive RPM achieved the greatest success in cardiovascular diseases than in other diseases. The study results showed that the RPM application is based on the specific device and the condition of interest. Care providers can alternate between invasive and non-invasive monitoring interventions to achieve the desired results. Evidence of RPM use in the specific condition, patient population, and environment is thus critical.

Automated peritoneal dialysis is a more effective way of promoting quality care delivery. Juang et al. (2021) note that patients under automated peritoneal dialysis portray more success in dialysis than in-center dialysis because APD does not allow toxins to accumulate in the blood. This research is significant because it is a clinical trial whose results can be used to promote further research and implement changes in practice. However, they are associated with more risk for infection at the incision site. Patient education is vital to promote self-care, patient safety, quality care delivery, and patient safety. Remote patient monitoring is a viable technology in various fields. RPM implementation and significance have gained familiarity, especially in the Covid-19 era. Patients and healthcare professionals opt for RPM compared to physical clinic visits due to their ability to promote self-care, promote patient satisfaction, and increase care quality (Tylor t al., 2021). The studies also present conflicting data and show that RPM is not applicable in all healthcare conditions, and extensive research ad clinical trials are necessary before implementation (Juang et al., 2021). Tabacof et al. (2020) show that RPM can help promote early access to advanced care services and prevent unnecessary physician clinic visits. Alboksmaty et al. (2022) showed the significance of specific devices in RPM and their effectiveness in patient monitoring. The study also presents gaps that include patient safety. It recommends that healthcare providers assess RPM interventions for efficacy and safety before implementing them in managing specific healthcare conditions.

RPM increase patient monitoring, data collection, and communication between patient and care providers. They enhance care continuity and produce data for multidisciplinary teams, enhancing their success (Malasinghe et al., 2019). Specific technologies, such as those in Covid-19 management, provoke prompt action by interdisciplinary teams and help with early access to advanced care. Patients thus report better satisfaction, and the healthcare organization enjoys a good reputation following quality healthcare outcomes. RPM is particularly important in enhancing care continuity in patients and promoting better patient outcomes. Healthier patients mean better patient self-reported healthcare experiences. Thus, RPM is a viable and promising healthcare technology.

A lot of work goes into the preparation and implementation of RPM. They may be efficient for the patients but may increase the workload and training needs of the healthcare providers. In addition, resources are required to run these programs. The lack of extensive research in this field limits the utilization of RPM technologies. With adequate funding and extensive research in RPM, these technologies could prove useful in promoting better patient outcomes, safety, and quality care delivery. Nurses should consider these technologies in improving the quality of their facilities.
