Business Plan Assignment

Employee staffing and payment systems have been major issues in the healthcare industry as they affect the entire operation cost. While all non-profit healthcare institutions strive to offer quality healthcare services, they are cautious about the amount they spend on the process. Poor staffing strategies have made various healthcare organizations bankrupt or employ qualified employees who they cannot pay effectively (Schoenfelder et al., 2020). These amount to poor financial decisions that affect an organization’s normal operations. The purpose of this assignment is to develop a business plan on a cost-effective business plan that TN can apply to meet the desired outcome.

This business plan relies on the PICOT question: Bachelor-prepared nurses working on the behavioral health unit (P), will be provided flexible scheduling and growth in their professional development (I), as opposed to not having flexible schedules and professional development available (C), this will retain 80% of our current bachelors prepared staff (O) within the next 8 months (T).

The purpose of the business plan is to develop a flexible scheduling program that aligns with professional demands. The program aims to develop value-based reimbursement at Trinity Health (TH) Ann Arbor in Michigan. This program will be targeting Bachelor prepared nurses for the BH unit working at the hospital. The business plan will help execute the above PICOT question and guide through the planning phase.

A business plan needs to be created based on the missions and visions of an organization. The alignment of the project plan to the desired mission and vision of the hospital will define the new business being created and how it would affect society positively (Schoenfelder et al., 2020). This business plan will include the purpose of the project, evidence supporting the project, the desired outcome, and marketing and financial analysis. Again, it will show how it blends with the mission and vision of the organization. Budget needs, cost analysis, and break-even analysis would also be included.

Addressing the flexibility of schedules among nurses would reduce nurse fatigue and improve the nurse output in the healthcare facility. Issues of high nurse workloads have an impact on both patients and nurses at the facility (Schoenfelder et al., 2020). Therefore, improving the staff schedules at the clinic would be significant in increasing the service delivery at the clinic. By presenting a practical business plan to the management and decision-makers at the clinic, it would get approval for other plans.

Business Plan Proposal

Nurse staffing affects employee output and patient safety. However, effective nurse staffing procedures would be significant in solving nurse staffing issues. Nurse workload significantly impacts the successful achievement of the desired outcome in any healthcare center (Schoenfelder et al., 2020). By implementing mixed payers at the facility will develop a value-based payment system where all professionals are paid for their time at the facility (Aydas et al., 2021). The project will take eight months at the end of the period, and the outcome we hope to see would be measured through various measures within the facility.

Address of receiver

Dear Owen.

It was great spending time with you and discuss various issues affecting employees at TH hospital. During our last meeting, we understood that staff scheduling is a factor that affects the cost and satisfaction of employees. Therefore, by improving staff scheduling, programs will be able to improve employee satisfaction and reduce heavy nurse workloads that affect their output negatively. I have spent time developing a business plan on this issue and how the project could benefit the organization.

By implementing the mixed payer system, we will be able to improve staff satisfaction, reduce their workload and reduce the cost of employment. Hiring new staff might increase the cost of running the hospital, and we could reduce costs by using the mixed-payer system. It has proved that poor scheduling of staff activities affects the working hours, further affecting the output of employees.

I am certain that the cost of a new project is reasonable and would greatly impact the entire cost of operating the hospital. Employees would welcome the project because it reduces their workloads and increases their earnings on the additional working hours at the facility. Besides, it would increase the overall scheduling plans of nurses and increase the quality of service delivery at the facility. I hope that by you approving this plan for implementation, we will be able to meet the desired outcome at the facility.

Sincerely,

Name

Detailed Abstract

Imagine working in a hospital without flexible hours for nurses and expecting nurses to give their best in delivering quality service to customers. How would these nurses have the ability to feel satisfied with their jobs and ensure that they always give the best services to the customers? These are the major issues that the business plans are aiming to solve and ensure that the sacrifice of the healthcare workers is valued and reimbursed adequately. Burnout is a form of exhaustion caused by excess and prolonged stress. Healthcare systems are driving many healthcare workers to burnout by having poor staff duty scheduling. The increased cases of burnout come from the many healthcare duties that limit healthcare workers from meeting their social or other parts of life (Marques-Pinto et al., 2018). Thus, these healthcare workers are at a high risk of developing mental health challenges causing them to resign from active healthcare service. Again, healthcare workers function in distressful environments that strain their emotional, physical, and psychological well-being. Increased cases of burnout limit patients from receiving the desired quality of care. By having a flexible staff schedule, nurses can plan their time and attend to other social life issues that might affect their output in the facility.

Having a fixed nurse schedule might be effective for the clinic as they might feel like optimizing their human resources. However, they might be adamant about the great danger of having fixed nurse schedules. For instance, the fixed nurse schedule is the main cause of nurse burnout and fatigue. Burnout is the major cause of poor nurse healthcare output (Peyton et al., 2019). In addition, Peyton et al. (2019) pointed out the link between low staff engagement or burnout and worse patient satisfaction, poor health outcomes, and higher expense. High cases of employees resigning from healthcare imply that the workforce is declining, hindering service delivery quality. Nurse burnout is a concern to patients, employers, and nurses. While nurses risk developing the depressive disorder and other mental issues, employers or institutions would record a decreased quality of care that can affect their reputation. On the other hand, nurse burnout directly impacts patient health. However, these negative issues that affect employees adversely could be solved by increasing flexibility on nurse schedules.

The project is scheduled to take eight months. During this time, the human resource department will change the nurse schedules to gain the desired flexibility. The most effective way to solve this would be by reducing the working hours on shifts. Variables such as acuity, number of admissions, discharges, transfers and staff skill level mix, physical space, and the availability of technical support or other resources should be taken into consideration when changing staff schedules (Hooshangi-Tabrizi et al., 2020). At a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4, each nurse should work eight hours a shift for a maximum. This change will show better outcomes for patient care, staff satisfaction, and cost savings in all areas. At the end of eight months of practicing this policy, the nurses will be interviewed to see how flexible nurse schedules impacted them in completing their assigned activities.

A financial plan would not be of much significance in this project because no major budgets have been involved. The changing of the scheduling activities does not require any external supply that might cost the hospital a significant amount of money. The schedules or nurses are already in place at the hospital, except that they do not have an effect on the improvement of quality and cost savings at the hospital. This implies that the current scheduling plan of nurses leads to more wastage that could be prevented by installing flexible nurse schedule plans. Suppose this proposal does not work in improving and making the nurse schedules flexible, it could result in a significant budget that would be used to fund activities needed to increase the flexibility of the nurse schedules. However, on small-scale activities, I do not feel the need to develop a budget or ask for external financial assistance from other financial institutions. The internal stakeholders, such as nurse managers, HR, and external stakeholders such as patients, would feel the financial freedom brought by this project.

This project aligns with the mission and vision of Trinity Health (TH) Ann Arbor. The organization’s mission is to serve together in the spirit of the Gospel as a compassionate and transforming healing presence within the community. This project is focused on improving the working hours of employees, which would have a significant effect on service delivery. Implementing this project will increase the flexibility of the nurses’ schedules allowing them to develop other facets of social life (Böðvarsdóttir et al., 2022). It is important to have a staff that is fit to serve and drive the organization in the desired direction. However, this objective is met by investing in the employees. This project allows Trinity Health to invest in the employees’ social well-being, which paves the way for better outcomes.

Quality is the level at which healthcare services increase the consistency of achieving the desired healthcare outcome. The quality concerns that this business plan will address is cost, safety, healthcare access, and improved patient outcome. Achieving quality care and patient safety emanates from effective communication platform development among nursing professionals. The employees need to expect the proposed change and work towards meeting the newly designed change goals at the institution (Marques-Pinto et al., 2018). Learning these changes will be important in comprehending the need to incorporate nurses’ skills and leadership knowledge as it affects many operations that affect the quality-of-care delivery. This essential also points to the nurse leader’s role in managing professionals and leading nurses to achieve the desired quality in the health care delivery system. Achieving quality in healthcare remains a core principle in nursing that equips nurses to always align with the measures that can lead to a positive change in patients.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this business plan acts as an itinerary for a long journey to quality improvement at Trinity Health (TH). Various challenges might occur in the implementation stage, but mitigation of these challenges would be a new dawn for TH. This business plan incorporates the financial aspect, which is an important and major area of concern at the clinic. Budgets are important in any healthcare center as they enable the hospital to stay on the financial plan. By proposing this project to the stakeholders, they will have time to evaluate it and certify its implementation. This is because of the benefits and changes it would have at the clinic.
