Description of the Proposed Project

The need to enhance patient outcomes and patient care efficiencies among providers is critical to improving the overall quality of healthcare in different settings. The proposed project in this case is about integration of telehealth technology through the use of portable devices like smartphones and laptops in the nursing department and other areas in the facility. Under this project, all healthcare staff should have wearable and monitored smartphones when they start their shift to the end. Further, nursing stations will have portable devices and laptops aimed at monitoring, alerting and reporting any anomalies that may occur. Through these tools, the providers and clinicians will not only record but also analyze information and deploy it in making critical clinical decisions that guarantee best quality and safe patient care.

Healthcare providers will also use these connected devices to communicate with the other members of the team concerning patient care (Ng et al, 2018). Nurses can also leverage wearable monitored smartphones to make fast calls to physicians alerting them of any sudden change in a patient’s condition without the need to go the nurse station to make a call. Using these devices, nurses and other providers can make video calls to specialty areas if it is not available onsite using the portable computer (Greiwe & Nyenhuis, 2020). The proposed project also entails integration with electronic health records system that will allow nurses to access patient health information and make fast and accurate decisions and take necessary actions.

Stakeholders Impacted by the Proposed Project

The implementation of this proposed project will have significant impacts on a host of stakeholders, both internal and external in the organization. In their study, Smuck et al. (2021) discuss the emerging role of wearables in clinical settings and factors that ensure successful implementation. The article advances that wearable technologies can redefine the assessment of health behaviors if implemented effectively by identifying all stakeholders that will be impacted by such initiatives. In this case, the implementation of this proposed project on wearable devices as a component of telehealth will impact different stakeholders (Greiwe & Nyenhuis, 2020). These include patients, nurses, physicians, specialists, therapists, the information technology department, informatics nurses and the nursing director.  The hospital administrator and management, the support staff, and team leaders as well system vendors are also critical stakeholders in this project.  

Patients and their families are part of this project because of the care that they will get using telehealth technologies. They will be impacted because of expected quality outcomes and patient experience. Nurses, physicians, therapists and specialists will use these devices to offer care and make decisions concerning effective patient plans of care. The IT team will be responsible in establishing Internet of Things (IoTs) to support the selected hardware and software. The IT team will work closely with the vendors to collect requirements for the project and develop appropriate technologies that integrate different areas of care provision in the facility. The informatics nurse has clinical expertise and technical knowledge that will assist in determining and choosing appropriate technology that meets organizational and patient needs.

The hospital management and administration will be responsible for approving the project, providing the require resources and support as well as management of staff and the overall budget during and after the implementation (Greiwe & Nyenhuis, 2020). The director of nursing will oversee all the operations and work closely with the project manager to develop integrated wearable devices that can monitor different aspects of care and offer fast feedback to patients and other stakeholders. Patient efficiencies entail ensuring that a patient gets services as fast as possible and with limited delays. The use of these technologies will ensure that patients can access accurate information and care plans while sharing their perspectives and preferences by the healthcare teams in different areas of care provision (Ng et al., 2018). Effective communication among providers will ensure that they develop integrated care plans to offer the best quality care for patients in different conditions.

Technologies Needed for the Project

The implementation of the proposed project on telehealth in the facility will require critical technologies to be successful and capture the aspirations of all stakeholders; right from nurses to patients as the primary beneficiaries. The project will require wearable monitored smartphones, portable devices like wrists and alert watches, laptops, and alarm systems integrated in critical areas of care provision like the nurse station. The project will also require a standard server to integrate this data and system with the rest of the organization’s system (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). The organization’s IT department in collaboration with the nursing department and informaticist nurse will select the most appropriate vendor for the technologies. Having one vendor or organization supply these technologies will be desirable and will enhance increased synchronization. The informaticist nurse will also conduct training on the technology to ensure that all stakeholders, especially end user, area familiar with its working.

The Project Team & Roles

The team for this project will play a critical role in ensuring full implementation and adoption of the initiative to enhance patient outcomes and efficiency in care provision. Imperatively, the project team will comprise of director of nursing, nurse manager, project manager, informatics nurse, representative of the physicians and therapists, and IT departmental manager as well as a representative from the organizational management and leadership. Every nursing staff will be onboard once the project is rolled out after testing and dry run. These include the check-in area, admissions and discharge staff. The role of nurses, physicians and other healthcare providers would be to provide information about different facets of the project and how they fit their working to improve outlined outcomes and efficiencies. The project manager will direct and ensure that all aspects of the project are implemented in the most effective manner while the IT department’s role would be to ensure that the system vendor integrates these technologies with existing organizational system to provide requisite synergy.

The informatics nurse’s integration into the project team is critical to the realization of its goals and objectives. In this case, the informatics nurse’s roles include collecting requirements and helping design a system that meets organizational needs, interpretation of information and training of the nurses who will interact more with the new system to improve efficiency. The nurse informaticist will also carry out orientation for any department and its staff to familiarize with the new system. The informaticist will also engage the IT team for any changes to system and even upgrade to improve the quality of service provided.  

Conclusion

The implementation of this project will be critical in improving overall care provision for patients and ensuring that they get quality care outcomes. The proposed project leverages existing telehealth technologies and the benefits that they offer to enhance quality outcomes among patients and efficiencies for nurses. The incorporation of nurse informaticist will be ensure that the system aligns with organizational needs that include increased efficiencies.
