Practicum Activities Reflection:

My practicum project mainly focuses on understanding the need for managers to maintain a good work-life balance. From my own experience and observation, nurses just like any other employee can get overwhelmed both at work and home. My preceptor has always insisted that even with several years of experience and learning appropriate strategies on work-life balance, nurses need to ensure that they curve out moments within the day when they can unwind. Without practicing self-care, nurses are at increased risk of burnout and depression, which undermines patient output. For the past two weeks, my preceptor has greatly helped me understand the need for work-life balance and the role of nursing leaders in promoting a conducive work environment to reduce depression and burnout among nurses. We identified several factors which can impact the well-being of nurses, that leaders should focus on, including lack of support, uncooperative coworkers, complicated technology, outdated equipment, minimal resources, recruitment and retention issues, and rotating shifts (Idulfilastri, 2021). With the development of appropriate strategies to overcome these challenges, nurse leaders can help promote fulfillment among nurses working in a healthy and supportive environment, hence promoting patient outcomes.

Application of Leadership:

From my observation, my preceptor utilized the servant leadership style to ensure that the workflow is effective while maintaining a good work-life balance. I was able to pick up several appropriate leadership competencies and skills. Such competencies include stewardship, foresight, conceptualization, awareness, persuasion, healing, empathy, and listening (Dempsey & Assi, 2018). With a servant leadership style, nurse leaders are expected to serve as examples to provide their followers with guidance. The leader must always be humble and understanding and ensure that he or she engages with staff members at a personal level to promote a positive working environment.

            As a nurse leader, I have always ensured that I engage adequately with my staff members with good communication skills, to promote shared decision making, This way, all nurses can work based on a reasonable working schedule with which they are all comfortable. I also avoid instances where nurses are overworked or feel overwhelmed to promote their morale which is crucial in improving the quality of care provided (Best, 2020). In case of conflict, I am always democratic, where the involved nurses are heard equally, and a solution is agreed upon without any favor. I have also learned the art of appreciating my team member in case of hard work to boost their morale and promote innovation in providing optimal care.

Practicum Project Preparation:

During the first week of my practicum project, I came up with goals and objectives to guide the whole learning experience. To ensure that I achieve all these goals and objectives, it is necessary to come up with an evaluation and adjustment plan. The evaluation plan will involve breaking down the practicum goals into weekly personal goals with measurable outcomes such as the number of hours spent on patients every week, and clinical skills to be acquired that week. Obtaining feedback from my preceptor regarding such goals in addition to self-evaluation helps determine whether the goals have been completely achieved, and the areas of weaknesses that need further attention (Usher et al., 2018). The practicum adjustment plan will be based on the outcome of the evaluation plan. For instance, after pointing out the areas that need further attention, it will be necessary to come up with appropriate measures that can help promote the achievement of these goals. I will however need to discuss the areas of shortcomings with my preceptor to be able to set aside extra hours, and better ways of achieving these goals and objectives.

Leadership Video Reflection:

            The “Servant Leadership- Issue of Rule” video demonstrates the aspect of ruling others when employing the servant leadership style. The speaker uses the leadership of Jesus Christ as an example of a good servant leader. In the video, the speaker defines the issue of rule as the responsibility leaders have over their followers (Servant Leadership – the Issue of Rule [Cc], n.d.). I learned that leaders should not display power or authority over others but instead serve their followers. As such, leader must not belittle their followers but instead exhibit a high level of humbleness when serving their followers. Leaders should also not make their followers work for them, but instead, work for their followers. Secondly, from the comparison the speaker has provided with the aspect of Christianity, a servant leader should not view his follower as individuals who need to see them as God. Just like Jesus, servant leaders should avoid the work rule in their leadership role, and understand that their leadership comes from the qualities that they have that can help people achieve their goals rather than using them.
