Leading Interprofessional Teams Essay

Leading Interprofessional Teams Essay

One of the major roles of the DNP-prepared nurse is using their leadership and management skills to lead and manage teams in practice change projects in their institutions. DNP-prepared nurses are also expected to have interprofessional collaboration skills, which assist in sustaining practice change projects, managing conflicts, and applying professional practice models effectively. This discussion presents the strategy I can use to sustain project improvements through intra-and inter-professional collaborations, my reactionary conflict management style, and an explanation of how a professional practice model can overcome barriers in leading practice change projects.

Intraprofessional and interprofessional collaboration enables professionals to work together to achieve common goals. The interprofessional collaboration strategy that I envision sustaining project improvement is having a clear vision and roles to avoid role confusion. According to Shakhman et al. (2020), one intraprofessional and interprofessional collaboration strategy is having a clear goal/vision, which enables the team to work together. Additionally, clarifying roles enables the team to achieve the goal faster since every member knows what is expected of them.

The Thomas Kilmann conflict model has five modes different people use when resolving conflicts: compromising, avoidance, competing, accommodating, and collaborating (Broekes, 2020). These modes depend on the assertiveness and cooperation of the people involved. Based on this model, my reactionary conflict style is accommodating since I am highly cooperative and less assertive. However, as a leader, I need to be more assertive in collaborating to find common ground in conflicts. More so, I will use communication as guided in interprofessional collaboration models to enhance collaboration in conflict management and resolution.

A professional practice model can help overcome barriers to leading a practice change project in an interprofessional environment by clarifying direction and roles. Mathieson, Grande & Lurke (2019) note that role conflict in an interprofessional environment is a major barrier to implementing practice change projects. Therefore, a professional practice model would help overcome the barrier.

Leading an interprofessional team is essential in a project change. DNP-prepared nurses should apply conflict management models to manage project implementation conflicts. Additionally, professional practice models help overcome barriers in practice change project implementation.
