MGT 605  Leadership in An Organization Self-Assessment Reflection Paper

Healthcare organizations require leaders who can effectively guide teams and manage resources. As nurse leaders or aspiring leaders, it is crucial to understand one’s skills and how to execute them. Self-assessment tests help nurse leaders understand their leadership potential, values, and intelligence, and other elements. Self-awareness ensures nurse leaders can relate well with their followers and exercise leadership according to their strengths. It also helps them to improve their weaknesses through learning, mentorship, and research, among other ways. The purpose of this paper is to provide the self-assessment results, appropriate leadership approach, professional nurse leader’s characteristics, and how leadership theories and styles shape the nurse leader.

Rationale, Brief Summary, and Self-Assessment Results

I used three self-assessment tests for self-reflection: the emotional intelligence test, values profile, and the VARK (visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic) questionnaire. Nurse leaders should be emotionally intelligent hence selecting the emotional intelligence test. From a leadership or management dimension, emotional intelligence demotes an individual’s ability to use, understand, and manage feelings and emotions (Prezerako, 2018). Since nurse leaders must be critical decision-makers, the emotional intelligence test helps them to assess their ability to understand and deal with emotions. Values determine how nurse leaders relate with other people and perceive issues. The VARK questionnaire illustrates an individual’s learning styles. Since nursing professionals should improve their knowledge, the VARK questionnaire results guide them in selecting the best learning style.

My results on emotional intelligence were encouraging (EQ score = 124, percentile score = 95). The results imply that I can understand and deal with emotions. A high EQ illustrates leaders with high problem-solving skills and leadership ability. On the values profile, I regard social values over other values. My top core value is social values implying that I enjoy helping and being kind and agreeable. My top personal value is social values too. The implication is that my home life, general attitude, and interests revolve around people. My top work value is social; hence, I am the happiest when utilizing individual talents to benefit others. People with social values see their career as a “helping profession.” The VARK results were visual-3, aural- 2, read/write- 8, and kinesthetic- 8 (Appendix 1). The results show that I learn best through reading, writing, and kinesthetic activities.

Leadership Style and Philosophy of Care

Nurse leaders’ philosophy of care determines their leadership approaches. As a nursing professional, I believe in providing patient-centered, compassionate, high-quality care that engages the patient and family in decision-making. Providing such care requires nurse leaders to serve nurses humanely and guide them to understand and solve patient needs. As a result, the servant leadership style closely aligns with my philosophy of care. According to Best (2020), servant leaders are committed to determining the needs of their staff and regularly ask them how they can be supported to solve problems and grow professionally. Servant leadership appeals to me since it is people-centered. Leaders work hard to cultivate and develop followers. Enabling nurses to reach their full potential improves their competence, builds better organizations, and promotes a caring world. Eva et al. (2019) observed that followers are more engaged and effective in their work when servant leaders prioritize their well-being and growth. Similarly, nurses are more engaged and effective in patient care under servant leadership. They benefit steward and empowerment, among other benefits central to servant leadership.

Incorporating Servant Leadership in Practice

Effective incorporation of servant leadership’s elements requires nurse leaders to understand its guiding principles and implement them in routine practice. These elements include engaging followers, empowering staff, and stewardship (Eva et al., 2019). As a result, I will exercise servant leadership if I engage followers and ensure they are empowered to grow and achieve their full potential. Unlike performance-oriented leadership that sacrifices followers, servant leadership empowers them to improve their potential and competence. Stewardship means taking care of resources entrusted to leaders. Similarly, I am responsible for growing material and financial resources entrusted to me as a servant leader.

Areas of Improvement

The assessments revealed that I can effectively cope with emotions (the emotional intelligence test), and I highly regard social values (values profile). In the learning preferences, I scored dismally in the visual (3) and aural (2) aspects. The VARK questionnaire results showed that I learn best through reading/writing and kinesthetic activities. However, leaders should be multidimensional as far as learning is concerned. They need to learn through observations, listening, and other styles. Therefore, I should improve on learning preferences by being more open to other learning styles, such as utilizing charts, simulations, and listening to audios.

Characteristics of an Effective Professional Nurse Leader

Professional nurse leaders should exemplify excellence in guidance, managing people and resources, and responding to the organization’s issues. Their routine work should be characterized by problem-solving brilliancy, openness to change, engagement, and staff empowerment. Anthony and Brett (2020) noted that problem-solving skills combine decision-making and critical thinking, which are essential for nurse leaders in the evolving practice. Openness to change typifies promoting innovative practice. Nurse leaders should also promote employee growth through engagement and empowerment. Nurse leaders must be brilliant problem solvers to address issues undermining a culture of safety, such as disruptive behavior, aggression, and incivility. The problem-solving ability allows nurse leaders to promote team integration and achieve maximum efficiency. Leaders open to change prepare organizations and staff to embrace change hence continuous organizational growth. Staff engagement and empowerment promote teamwork and enable the staff to improve their skills. Skilled nurses improve the quality of patient care and the organization’s productivity.

Leadership Theory and Leadership Style

Different leadership theories and styles influence nurse leaders differently. Common theories include contingency, transformational, and authoritarian leadership theories. Leaders guided by these theories apply leadership styles that implement the theories’ fundamental principles. The transformational leadership theory is among the widely applied theories in nursing leadership. Its basic guideline is that leaders must prioritize intrinsic motivation and move it from low levels to high levels to enable the nursing workforce to deliver excellent results (Chu et al., 2021). Accordingly, transformational leaders inspire employees as they look forward to a more outstanding employee and organizational outcomes in transformational development. Chu et al. (2021) explained that the transformational leadership style’s dominant characteristics include idealized influence, empowerment, inspiration, and motivation. Leaders and employees collaborate in decision-making and problem-solving. They work together to achieve the desired vision as they consult each other, negotiate, and address practice issues as a team.

Conclusion

Health care organizations require forward-thinking leadership to optimize their productivity. Nurse leaders are critical in promoting teamwork and empowering the nursing staff. To perform excellently, self-assessment of emotional intelligence, values, and learning preferences is crucial. My assessment results demonstrated that I excel in managing emotions and score highly in social values. Concerning learning preferences, I scored highly in reading/writing and kinesthetic activities. The assessment will guide me to improve where necessary as I utilize my leadership skills to empower and guide individuals, organizations, and the entire nursing practice.
