Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a monument dedicated to American soldiers who have died without their remains being identified. It is located in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia. The tomb was constructed in 1921 and originally intended to be a temporary memorial (Van Way, 2021). However, it proved to be so popular that it was made permanent. Visitors can leave letters and mementos for the unknown soldiers buried there. The tomb is constructed from Yule marble from Colorado and features an inscription from John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields”. Visitors can also place small American flags or flowers at the foot of the sarcophagus. The tomb’s aesthetic design elements were specifically chosen to represent America’s military dead and their sacrifice.

When I look at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, I see a powerful symbol of sacrifice. In other words, the characteristic that stand out to me from this cultural work is the powerful symbol of sacrifice. The creator of this monument intended to express the idea that anyone who dies in combat for their country is unknown and therefore equal. I think they were successful in achieving this goal. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier represents all of the anonymous soldiers who have given their lives for their country (Van Way, 2021). It is a reminder that each individual who dies in combat is important and that their death should not be forgotten. This monument is a tribute to all the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

One cultural work that meets the conditions in Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from a culture unfamiliar is The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The monument lists the names of all 58,272 Americans who were killed or went missing in action during the Vietnam War (Korzilius, 2022). It was designed by Maya Lin, a Chinese-American architect, and dedicated on November 11, 1982. Studying cultural works from different cultures can help to provide a more nuanced understanding of the world and its complexities. It can also help to foster a greater appreciation for other cultures and their traditions. Additionally, studying cultural works from different cultures can help to develop cross-cultural competencies, which are increasingly important in the globalized world we live in today (Korzilius, 2022).

The Impact of Diversity in the Study of the Humanities

When a person look at cultural works through the lens of the humanities, they can gain a deeper understanding of the reasons for their creation and how they reflect the values and culture of the time period in which they were created. Individuals can also see how different cultural works compare and contrast with each other, and how they have been interpreted and adapted over time (Ergashev & Farxodjonova, 2020). This broader perspective can help researchers to appreciate the beauty and complexity of human culture, as well as to understand the different perspectives that exist within it.

By learning about the cultural works of other cultures, we can gain new perspectives on our own experiences. For example, by reading ancient Roman poetry, we can come to understand how the ancients viewed love and relationships. This can give us a new perspective on our own romantic experiences and allow us to appreciate them in a new light. Similarly, by reading African folktales, we can learn about traditional African values and customs (Ergashev & Farxodjonova, 2020). This can help us to better understand people from Africa and to see them in a more positive light. We may even be inspired to visit Africa ourselves and experience its rich culture firsthand.

Conclusion

Cultural works play an important role in shaping and defining a culture. They can be used to educate and entertain people, and can help to preserve a culture’s traditions and values. By learning about the cultural works of other cultures, we can gain new perspectives on our own experiences (Ergashev & Farxodjonova, 2020). Studying cultural works from different cultures can help to provide a more nuanced understanding of the world and its complexities. It can also help to foster a greater appreciation for other cultures and their traditions.

Module Two Project Proposal Guidelines and Rubric

Overview

For this assignment, which supports your final project, you should place yourself in the role of a researcher of human cultures, an anthropologist who is looking from the future back into our world today. You are asked to conduct a thorough analysis of today’s culture via a cultural work, seeking to understand how it represents culture and how it reflects its cultural environment. The work you select here will be used for your analysis in the project. Aside from selecting a work for your project, you will also look to evaluate cultural works of cultures unknown to you.

Prompt

Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:

  1. Select a cultural work (Tomb of the unknown solider) from the world around you, one with cultural or historical interest, and briefly describe it in your submission. This cultural work should meet the following conditions:
    • It can take any form and be from any physical modality (visual, aural, tactile, and so on).
    • It should be a form of expression that you might encounter any day, which intrigues you and makes you want to know more about it.
    • It must be a specific work; for example, instead of choosing the American flag, you might elect to analyze the flag at the capitol building in Washington, DC.
    • It should be artificial in nature, with aesthetic design elements.
  2. After choosing a cultural work to evaluate, answer the following questions:
    • What characteristics or elements of the work stand out to you?
    • What do you think the creator intended to express?
    • Were they successful?
  3. Next, select a cultural work that meets the conditions above but is from a culture unfamiliar to you. Reflect on the value or meaning of studying cultural works from different cultures.
  4. Evaluate the impact of diversity in the study of the humanities by considering the following:
    • How does looking through the lens of the humanities affect your understanding of diverse cultural works and the reasons for their creation?
    • How could learning more about cultural works from other cultures equip you with skills or new perspectives for experiences in your life (work, community, family, and so on)?
