Reflection on Essentials and Competencies
Nurses study to influence patient care and population health positively. In the process, they acquire different competencies to address current and emerging issues affecting diverse individuals and groups. As nursing professionals study and practice, they should focus on the future and ensure they have the essential competencies to impact practice in the desired direction. This discussion explores future nursing core competencies and essentials pivotal in influencing my future practice.
Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies
Core competencies are primarily about a nurse’s ability to excel in practice by ensuring that performance meets the desired goals. Excellence is achieved by implementing nursing skills accurately, logical thinking, and meeting clients’ needs (Negreiros et al., 2022; Kwame & Petrucka, 2021). One of the core competencies that will impact my future professional nursing practice the most is patient-centered care. Kuipers et al. (2019) described patient-centered care as tailoring care to meet patients’ unique needs. Such care is characterized by respect and effective response to patients’ preferences, needs, and values when making clinical decisions. The other core competencies that will impact my future practice the most is interprofessional collaboration and teamwork. In an interprofessional approach, individuals and teams with diverse skills, competencies, logic, and values collaborate to address a shared problem (Skyberg & Innvaer, 2020). The approach is crucial in nursing due to the complexity, dynamism, and evolution of patient needs.
These competencies are the most important since they put me in a better position to provide high-quality care, solve problems competently, and foster healthy patient-provider relationships. Besides, these competencies will be essential in the future as the practice evolves to be more client-driven and outcome-oriented. Essential for high patient satisfaction, patient-centered care obliges care providers to embrace holism and include patients in critical decision-making (Kuipers et al., 2019). Such engagement allows patients to be in complete control of their health, hence high adherence to the treatment plans. Interprofessional collaboration and teamwork nurture a culture of interdependence between diverse team members (McLaney et al., 2022). It ensures team members understand each other’s roles and scope of work and readily cooperate to tackle shared problems. This competency will be vital in future practice since diverse team members will need to collaborate to address emerging patient care and workplace problems.
AACN BSN Essential
The Essential that will be most important in improving quality in my future nursing practice is clinical prevention and population health. Broadly, this framework is founded on the importance of health professionals using their skills in population-oriented prevention and health promotion efforts. It is a crucial competency for nurses to prevent health problems from occurring at the root cause level. As Shahzad et al. (2019) noted, a comprehensive understanding of prevention measures and population health can help nurses to address structural inequities and systemic issues hampering health and well-being. Such issues include racism, unequal access to healthcare resources, and social stratification (Taylor, 2019; Riley, 2020). My practice will significantly improve by using this essential since it is centered on health promotion and disease prevention. In this case, it will promote a proactive approach to healthcare problems, reducing costs and associated illness management complexities.
Nurses should be adequately prepared to improve the profession in the future. This preparation involves acquiring the right competencies and values. I believe patient-centered care and interprofessional collaboration and teamwork will have the most impact on my future professional nursing practice. Concerning Essentials, clinical prevention and population health will be the most important in improving quality in future practice.
