Technology continues to shape healthcare delivery in multiple aspects as providers seek new methods, tools, and processes for improving patient outcomes. One of the key technologies with a high potential to influence health outcomes is artificial intelligence (AI). From a personal viewpoint, AI involves using machines to execute human functions. To function as expected, these machines are fed with data, which they use to create patterns and interpret new information. Bajwa et al. (2021) described AI as the science of making intelligent machines that follow algorithms or a set of rules to mimic human cognitive functions. Such functions in healthcare include problem-solving, translating medical records, and image recognition.
When adopting or recommending a technology in healthcare, nursing professionals should be guided by its potential to impact their practice positively. According to Glover et al. (2022), AI integration into healthcare improves critical aspects like patient care and administration. For patients, AI applications improve diagnosis and treatment through accurate data processing. This accuracy has been witnessed through precision medicine and machine learning in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Besides, AI tools improve patient engagement and medication adherence, leading to more effective and positive health outcomes (Babel et al., 2021; Alowais et al., 2023). In healthcare administration, robotic process automation (RPA) can be used in applications like medical records management and clinical documentation.
As nurses continue using AI for different functions, they should be conversant with the legal, privacy, and ethical considerations guiding its use. In regular practice, AI systems/smart machines can make errors and be subject to algorithmic bias (Naik et al., 2022). The likelihood of data breaches due to information hacking and other cybersecurity challenges denotes the inability to comply with the legal guidelines protecting patient data. AI capacity also depends on the input data used to create patterns. This private information can be obtained from patients unknowingly or not consent to its use. Davenport and Kalakota (2019) further mentioned the potential of AI not providing the necessary human interactions in patient care. This implies that patients may not get compassionate and empathetic care, which healthcare providers should strive to achieve always.
