NR717 Reflection on Learning and Practice Readiness Essay

NR717 Reflection on Learning and Practice Readiness Essay

Analyze and evaluate how your thinking was challenged in this course related to (1) advocacy for population health, (2) disaster preparedness, and (3) health policy.

This has been an engaging and informative training. Looking back, I can say that the course’s goals pushed me to my limits, and I believe that the skills I gained will be handy as a DNP student. The DNP student was expected to research, develop, and implement an advocacy strategy for a particular demographic as part of the course’s goals. To fulfill this course’s goal, I conducted an analysis of the plight of African Americans in the Jackson, Mississippi, area who suffer from avoidable diseases due to health disparities. Factors such as age, education, income, and access to healthcare play a role in determining the overall health of a population and, hence, the high prevalence of the diseases (Powell-Wiley et al., 2022).

Improving one’s knowledge of disaster management is another good way to bring about change in local practices. By studying how to implement public health measures to reduce morbidity and death rates in the wake of a catastrophe or epidemic, the FEMA emergency course helped me become a better disaster manager. The training affirmed my belief that as a first responder, it is my responsibility to be well-prepared to deal with any crisis that may arise and to implement effective measures to restore the health of those affected (Baetzner et al., 2022).

The training also allowed me to develop my health policy expertise by exposing me to a healthy people 2030 goal that can contribute to meeting the healthcare demands of the targeted population. By liaising closely with politicians and professional organizations, I gained greater experience in advocating for a policy issue. The training allowed participants to put their thoughts on paper for legislators and give a thorough overview of the burden and its effects on health promotion. I also used Bardach’s eight-fold policy analysis model to examine the policy proposal further. In this way, I was able to evaluate how well the chosen policy initiative addressed the healthcare requirements of the sampled population.

Considering this new knowledge, examine how this learning prepares you to practice as a DNP-prepared nurse.

The course’s content and having good participation in it will be crucial in shaping one’s growth both professionally and personally. My goal is to use the expertise and abilities I have gained in this course to enhance the general well-being of the study population by identifying any existing practice gaps in the nursing specialty and developing interventions to address them using evidence. The training also taught me valuable lessons in advocacy; with this newfound expertise, I will be better equipped to support local and national efforts to boost public health. Nurses must stay vigilant in advocating for pertinent health issues affecting all populations, with the goal of bettering their health outcomes (Myers, 2020).
