My philosophy statement is founded on my beliefs about the nursing profession, personal values, and healthcare ethics. I believe that nurses should strive to provide compassionate, empathetic, high-quality, and patient-centered care that is directed by best practices. My inspiration in nursing practice is to see patients receive high-quality preventive, curative, and rehabilitative healthcare that alleviates their physical and emotional suffering and improves their quality of life.
The personal values that are the basis of my nursing philosophy statement include caring, honesty, empathy, self-worth, fairness, and compassion. The nursing profession is grounded on the values of caring, which involve being connected to patients and their families and making them feel valued. Thus, I can help patients and families cope when facing risks and situations that leave them vulnerable by demonstrating a caring attitude. My philosophy is also based on the professional values that I believe in, which steer my professional practice. The professional values include autonomy, valuing the dignity and worth of each individual, strong commitment to service, and commitment to education and research. As a nurse, I should commit to constantly improving my knowledge and skills through continuous education programs, which will enhance the quality of nursing care that I deliver to patients. In addition, a nurse should engage in research to constantly seek to come up with innovations that will improve healthcare delivery and health outcomes for patients and the community.
Healthcare ethical principles that guide my nursing practice include autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice. I firmly believe that patients should be involved in making their healthcare decisions since it drives them to engage in the recommended solutions. In my professional practice, I make decisions guided by principles of beneficence and nonmaleficence to ensure that the interventions I implement will improve the patient’s health status rather than worsen it. Furthermore, I advocate that healthcare services be available to individuals who need them most, thus promoting social justice.
